Of course, no discussion about the use of NiMH batteries in all-electric cars is complete without mention of the controversy (some would say conspiracy) surrounding their allowed usage. Cobasys, which is a 50/50 joint venture between subsidiaries of Chevron and ECD Ovionics (Chevron also owns 19.99 per cent of ECD Ovionics and effectively controls who is licensed to use the tech) prevented Toyota from continuing to use the cross-licensed and improved Panasonic NiMH battery in their RAV4EV and production of that vehicle ceased. Owners of RAV4 EVs today can not buy new NiMH batteries, although they can have theirs refurbished.


Though NiMH batteries may enjoy popularity today, it appears they are being replaced by lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries. These batteries have a few advantages over NiMH. Besides not having patent licensing issues preventing their use in all-electric cars, they are lighter and contain more energy. We will discuss li-ion in more detail in a future Greenlings post.

Battery breakthroughs abound

In an attempt to keep our readers up to date on the very latest developments in technology as it pertains to transportation and the lessening of our carbon footprints, we often burn the midnight oil and labor to understand technical papers until our brains cramp and ears bleed. OK, maybe I'm the only one with the ear thing but what I'm trying to get across is that we are not slackers (Not that there is anything wrong with that.) And it is in that spirit of brain-crampedness (and sore ears) we present you now with some of the latest news of breakthroughs in the batteries that may one day power your hybrid or electric car.

Tin is one of the materials thought to hold promise as an electrode because it theoretically should hold onto a lot of energy. Unfortunately, it breaks down easily from the passing of the lithium ions. Scientists at the Institute of Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences think they may have come up with a clever way around this by enclosing nano-sized bits of tin inside elastic hollow carbon spheres, as you can see in the photograph above. The way they accomplish this trick is a little complicated but here is a link to an article in Nanowerk that explains it all in painstaking detail. The result of all this nano-manipulation is an anode with a high specific energy capacity and good cycling performance. To top it all off the researchers believe "their results successfully demonstrate the power of the strategy of using elastic hollow carbon spheres as buffer and container and could be extended to other anode and cathode materials." Exciting stuff.


The other news comes to us from this article in Technology Review about work being carried out at the Argonne National Laboratory. The over-achieving scientists there have made safety improvements, increased the power density and number of charge cycles lithium ion batteries with cobalt oxide electrodes can perform. Not only that, but they have already licensed the technology to a major materials supplier, Toda Kogyo of Japan. Their improvements were achieved by creating a new composite electrode with the cobalt oxide and an electrochemically inactive material. Although this should enable the battery to hold up to 30 percent more energy, the article claims that it is not able to discharge at rates high enough to make it useful for high- power applications such as hybrid and electric cars. Not yet anyway, so the work there continues.

Startup Boasts Better Lithium Batteries

A California company called Envia Systems is developing a battery that promises to store twice the energy of lithium-ion batteries—the kind typically used in electric cars.


Envia has received investment from General Motors, which could be one of the biggest buyers of lithium-ion batteries for cars in coming years thanks to a planned lineup of plug-in cars including the Chevy Volt. The automaker's venture capital arm, GM Ventures, announced a $7 million investment in the startup last month.


Envia says its batteries could lower the cost of plug-in vehicles by reducing the need for costly metals, and by cutting the number of cells needed to store a given amount of energy in a vehicle's battery pack. Elton Cairns, a professor of chemical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, says a manganese-based cathode should indeed help to reduce battery costs. Envia's recipe involves high-capacity, manganese-rich cathodes with a layered-layered composite structure (made with two different layered components) based on technology licensed from Argonne National Laboratory.


According to GM Ventures president Jon Lauckner, GM, Envia, and other companies have licensed different patents from one "family" of intellectual property related to manganese-rich layered-layered composite-cathode technology.


The current version of GM's Volt uses lithium-ion batteries made with lithium-manganese spinel cathodes ("spinel" refers to the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in the material). The cathode material has active components, through which lithium ions move when the battery is charged or discharged, and inactive ones, which help stabilize the active material and extend the life of the battery—a vital quality in electric-car batteries.


Envia's cathode uses relatively inexpensive materials. Although the "cost is in the same ballpark as what cell makers use today," says Lauckner, the material could deliver a one-third improvement in energy density at the cell level compared to what's on the market today. This figure is based on data from a prototype that Envia designed for a specific GM vehicle application.


Envia has also begun working on more higher energy density anodes, with a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. Last year, in partnership with Argonne, Envia set out to develop silicon-carbon nanocomposite anodes with the idea of integrating them with high-capacity cathodes, and devising processes for scaling up production to high volumes.


Over the next three years, Envia hopes to develop a battery for all-electric vehicles. "We'll push the energy density as high as we can" by tweaking variables like coatings, porosity, and composition of the material, says Envia co-founder and business development chief Michael Sinkula. Envia was awarded a $3.65 million contract in December by the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (a coalition between Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors) to undertake this initiative.


Ultimately Envia's goal is to build a battery that has a capacity of more than 400 watt-hours per kilogram—triple that of current vehicle batteries, according to Sinkula. Currently, he says, Envia's best lab results are showing over 300 watt-hours per kilogram. But Sinkula believes that with a new anode material to match the potential of the company's cathode, the higher target will be achieved.


"If that 300 is real," says Cairns, "that would be a significant improvement." But he says this performance needs to be demonstrated and verified by a third party. Even after independent verification, a big question mark will hang over Envia's promise to deliver a better battery until it starts cranking out cells in larger volumes. Cairns says that until you have "some level of industrial production—many thousands of cells a year—you don't really have a chance to test under the range of conditions," such as high and low temperatures, and fast charging, that a commercial product will need to withstand.

Don't overheat your computer

When your computer’s processor, chipset, or hard drive overheats, you can wind up with big problems. From system slowdowns to application crashes, video corruption, data loss, to permanent damage to your computer hardware. It’s important to keep your computer running cool.


Your computer has sensors in various places to monitor the internal temperature and regulate the fan speeds. These sensors are typically in places such as your CPU, graphics card, hard drive, and maybe one in open air (typically in desktops). Unlike your car, there’s no easy indicator of what the temperature is until things start to go wrong, and those fans can only do so much. Dust can clog heatsinks and air passages, which can slow down the flow of air and drive the chip temps up. If a fan fails completely, it will stop the airflow and the temperature will climb rapidly. For those reasons it helps to have a program to actually tell you what these temperature sensor readings are. If things are getting a little too hot, you might want to know so you can check things out.


For Windows, two good utilities are Speedfan (free) and Everest . For Ubuntu, two good programs can be found in Synaptic: sensors-applet and hddtemp.


Those programs will read the temp sensors and tell you the values. Unfortunately, these numbers won’t mean very much if you don’t know what the limits of your hardware are. For example, while typing this article on my laptop, my CPU temp is 35C (95F). While that might sound hot to some, the thermal design limit of my CPU is actually 105C (source: Intel). I know my processor is well within the design limits.

However bear in mind when using these spec sheets that the given specs are for the components themselves under controlled conditions. Chipsets are likely to become unstable before reaching these temps, and heat run-off may damage nearby components on circuit boards. Additionally, occasional manufacturing defects can cause chip failures before these temperatures are reached. I would always suggest to try to stay at least 15-20C below the rated temperature.


If you can’t find specific temps for your chipset, good guidelines would be to try to stay below the following temps:


55C for desktop CPUs, 85C for laptop CPUs.

75C for desktop GPUs, 75C for laptop GPUs.

55C for desktop HDDs, 45C for laptop HDDs.
