We can’t say we’ve ever had a notebook power supply fail on us here at PC World, but out there in the real world we know these things happen. Often, replacing your notebook power supply can be a troublesome and expensive affair as notebook manufacturers jack up prices on such items and, if your notebook is older, sometimes finding a genuine replacement will be tricky. It’s times like these that universal power adapters are the answer.

We checked out a new model from power supply manufacturer Acbel. It’s a slimline unit that weighs only 230g, measures 70 x 96 x 16mm and even comes with a handy little carry pouch to keep all those pesky wires tidy in your bag.

Rated at 90w it should meet the needs of most notebooks. For instance, the large, power hungry Dell Vostro 1720 we tested this issue comes with a 90w power supply of its own which the Acbel unit worked perfectly with, so it’ll happily cope with all but the very largest of notebooks. It’s an automatic switching unit so there’s no need to worry about matching up output ratings with your old power adapter such as Lenovo N100 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad 240 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad 600 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad A30 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad R30 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad R51 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad R60 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad T42 Adapter, IBM Thinkpad X60 Adapter, IBM 92P1025 Adapter.

Actually connecting the power supply to your notebook is perhaps the trickiest part. This one comes with nine interchangeable heads that cover a vast array of notebooks from all major manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Clevo, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, Hitachi, HP, IBM, Lenovo, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Toshiba. We tested it with three notebooks we had in the office and it worked with two of them – a Dell and a Toshiba. The tiny Sony Vaio X113 didn’t like it, however, and refused to charge despite having the correct sized adapter fitted.

While we can recommend this universal power supply to most readers, you’ll need to make sure it works with your specific notebook before you purchase.
