The new Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU is a 15.6-inch laptop based on Intel's Core i3-330M processor, primarily aimed at home usage. It has a unique texture on its body, offers decent performance, and sells for a very good price.

Design

It is hard to miss the Compaq Presario CQ62's cover design. The guys at HP-Compaq Presario have done a very good job of sprucing up the Compaq CQ62's look and feel, . The silver-colored biscotti screen lid is covered entirely in an elaborate pattern of bars, forming minuscule triangles all over the place. Although made of plastic, the CQ62's screen lid looks elegant and feels premium. And the textured surface is splashed all over the palmrest, touchpad, and the space engulfing the Compaq CQ62's black keyboard. The Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU laptop's chassis edge is covered with a smooth silver-colored strip, thereby distinguishing itself in terms of looks from other laptops featured in our Top 5 Budget Laptops list. It's definitely a very good looking laptop, the CQ62-105TU, with its two-toned black-on-silver color scheme -- better than the Compaq Presario CQ40-536TX we reviewed earlier.

For a budget home laptop, the Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU is very well built. Its 15.6-inch screen is tethered well to the rest of the chassis with two solid metal hinges. And for a 15-inch laptop, with six-cell battery like compaq 367759-001 battery, compaq 367760-001 battery, compaq 375942-001 battery, compaq 375974-001 battery, compaq 382552-001 battery, compaq 383493-001 battery, compaq 391883-001 battery, compaq 396601-001 battery, compaq 397164-001 battery, compaq 398065-001 battery, the Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU weighs just 2.5-kg -- lighter compared to some other 15-inch laptops like the Acer Aspire 5740, Lenovo Ideapad Y550, or Sony VAIO E.

Usability

The Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU comes with a 15.6-inch LED-backlit glossy screen which supports a maximum screen resolution of 1366x768 pixels. The CQ62's screen is evenly lit but a little less bright compared to the screens of Acer Aspire 4740 and Dell Inspiron 15-1564 laptops. However, both reading text and watching movies is handled well by the Compaq Presario CQ62's 15.6-inch screen, and it has average viewing angles. A 1.3MP webcam and microphone recessed on the laptop's top screen bezel is nice enough for video chats over Skype.

The keyboard and touchpad on the Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU tell their own interesting story. The keyboard appears similar to the one that Dell Inspiron 14R has, but the keys are more tightly packed on the CQ62's keyboard. The keys are well laid out, nice and springy to type on, and all the important keys (Enter, Space, Shift, Arrow Keys, etc.) are prominent in size. A column of quick-launch buttons on the Compaq Presario CQ62-105TU's keyboard's left edge is something we don't see on most budget laptops -- dedicated buttons to launchcalculator, print documents, launch Web browser, and launch email client are nice to have. The Compaq Presario CQ62's touchpad is textured like the rest of its body and a little raised above the keyboard. We like the textured touchpad surface, but we hate the fact that the touchpad doesn't have any distinguishing borders on either edge. It's very easy to move out of the touchpad area while trying to move the mouse on screen. But we like the overall feel and response of the touchpad.
