Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100

Welcome to a Laptop Battery specialist

While users of notebook PCs can boast portability over their desktop devotees, the notebook has traditionally come second best where processing power and graphics are concerned.

Although developments by AMD and Intel have increased the speed of mobile processors to compete with their desktop equivalents, graphics have always been a sore point - until now.

The Pro 6100 is Toshiba's latest newcomer to its Satellite range and enjoys a specification up there with the best we've seen from a notebook. At £2,500, we expect it to be good.

Starting with the processor, we were pleased to find Toshiba has made use of the new mobile Pentium 4. Unlike their desktop brethren, mobile Pentium 4s are built with a chipset that supports speedy DDR memory.

So the 256Mb of DDR memory built into the unit complements the 1.7GHz processor well, ensuring quick application loading times and fast data processing.

That said, any computer packing a price tag this large should be wearing twice that much memory. The 40Gb hard disk will last, storing everything from small office documents to large digital media files.

Intel has also tried to combat poor battery life by giving its SpeedStep technology a slight makeover. SpeedStep now slows down the processor when the notebook is running on battery like Toshiba PA3727U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3534U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3535U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PABAS098 Battery, Toshiba PABAS099 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A200 Battery, Toshiba PA3729U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba Satellite P500 Battery, Toshiba Satellite P505 Battery, Toshiba Satellite P505D Battery and decreases system power when in sleep mode.

This provided a battery life of just under two hours. That may not sound like much but, considering the power of this monster, we were more than pleased with the results.

Where this machine really stands out, however, is in its graphics performance. Not only does it incorporate the Pentium 4-M, it sports the first nVidia GeForce4 420 Go graphics card we've seen.

This allows a previously unheard of maximum screen resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 and, when united with 32Mb of dedicated graphics memory, provides the best visual gaming experience we've encountered on a notebook.

Even while dodging bullets in the graphics-hungry Medal of Honor, we were met with a smooth display and jitter-free playing.

The Satellite Pro 6100 is well measured on the hardware front with a CD-RW/DVD-Rom combination drive making it possible to watch DVD movies on the clear 15.1in display or create audio CDs.

If you don't fancy the idea of squeezing around the notebook for a night of movie watching, you can employ the built-in S-Video socket to show the picture on a normal television.

The two stereo speakers moulded below the display sound good and the headphone socket is built into the front of the unit for convenience.

As expected, parallel, TV-out, serial, modem and network sockets can be found behind a flip-down cover at the rear of the notebook, while an SD Card slot, PC Card slot, PS/2 and two USB ports are positioned just next door.

Wireless connectivity is provided by the infrared port or Bluetooth connections.

Anyone brave enough to stump up for this beast will have the one-off choice of installing Windows 2000 or XP. We chose the latter, which looked great with the display set-up.

The Satellite Pro 6100 is the fastest, best-specified notebook we've seen to date. Even if it does cost a small fortune, we were still very impressed.
