When she’s not pulling together entire shoots by herself using only her contacts and her computer screen, she’s being passionate about marine conservation! Hella takes us behind the scenes into the process of creating all of her incredible images and reminds us it takes a lot of hard work!Tell us about your career as model. How did you get started?I started three years ago, with a shoot with Myrna Moonstruck. It was also the first modelling shoot of the photographer, and Myrna also didn’t have much experience. After this shoot, it was quiet for half a year, but then I picked up modelling for real. From there on, I did more shootings and started to find out what kind of styles I love to do.Did you always want to be a model or did you have other career aspirations when you were growing up?Well, I didn’t want to become a model in particular. I just remember that I wished to be found pretty and beautiful by boys when I was around 12, because I have been teased a lot at the primary and secondary school. At a very young age, I knew for sure I wanted to become a vet. I loved animals, and I just thought that that would be my future career. But when I almost left secondary school, I figured out that being a vet would be very difficult, so I looked to more options. Finally, I chose to study Applied Biology. I am now dreaming of becoming a plant science teacher, or opening a vegan bakery.Do you love any one genre of modelling more than another?Well, I like a lot of genres of modelling. I particularly love alternative modelling, things like fantasy or gothic related stuff. I also look to other models, what kind of shoots they are doing, so I can look if I would like to do that too. I am not so into glamour or ‘normal’ modelling, because that gets boring after some time. What was your first shoot as a model like? Tell us a little about it!I remember my friend Myrna Moonstruck asked me if I could join her for a photoshoot. I said yes, not knowing what was going to happen. We went to the east of the Netherlands, to an old mansion and an old factory that was closed years ago after it burned down. Myrna told me to bring some gothic and vintage clothing, and there in the toilet of the mansion we did the make-up. Although it was very cold in the factory, I am still happy about the results I have from this shoot.Of your personal interests nature, art, fantasy, playing music, one really stands out, marine conservation! Could you tell us a bit about this? How did you get into marine conservation? The world and its problems have always been interesting to me. One of the things that caught my eye was that the oceans are in huge trouble. If we keep fishing at the same speed as we currently do, the oceans will be empty in 2050! This really shocked me and I said to myself I had to help people who are fighting against the illegal fishing industry. Around two years ago I decided to join the organisation The Black Fish, which is mostly working on education and protection the European oceans. Unfortunately, currently I don’t have enough time to work for this organisation, but in the future I want to help them with the educational part. What has been your hardest shoot to date? There have been some shoots that were difficult. My body cannot stand the cold for a long time, but still I did some shoots outside when it was below 10 C. I also did some shoots who asked for me quite some strength in the abs (where I am not muscular, haha). But the most hardest one was the shoot in Berlin some weeks ago. I arranged it completely myself, first contacting the photographer behind my computer. Then I asked a friend who lives in Berlin, if she could do my hair and make-up. I also asked another friend who makes corsets, if I could lend a corset from him. I just arranged everything from behind my computer, hoping it would work out. So I went on a trip to Berlin, and it all went fine. You’re well known for your conceptual fantasy shoots. What do you find most interesting about fantasy shoots? The thing I find most interesting, is that everyone who sees a picture from a fantasy shoot, makes up their own story behind it. I also just love fantasy, because it is a total different world then the one we are living in now. When I do a fantasy shoot, I just feel free and I can use my own imagination. It is also different then the work that most fashion models do, so I feel more original. What are some of your favourite fantasies to draw inspiration from?I always loved to read fairytales and scary stories, as a young kid. I loved to create stories and art, that came straight from my own imagination. I really got into fantasy, after seeing movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I dressed up to go to fantasy-fairs and read more interesting stories. I draw inspiration from old legends and myths, especially from ancient mythology. I also like the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Lemony Snicket and Tim Burton. I hope I can do some shoots inspired on those things in the future.
