Start-up to launch safer notebook battery

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist

The Sonata battery--which the company is set to show off at the Demo '07 show taking place this week in Palm Desert, Calif.--is safer than conventional batteries, but is electrically and mechanically compatible to current notebook designs, according to the company. Notebook makers can thus drop it into their existing models, said CEO Christina Lampe-Onnerud, who added that Hewlett-Packard has been testing it for 18 months.

As a bonus, the Sonata battery can be charged to 80 percent capacity in about 30 minutes. Conventional notebook batteries take one to two hours to get to 90 percent capacity.

"We picked 30 minutes and drove development to that," Lampe-Onnerud said.

The company is part of a wave of battery start-ups that have emerged in the past few years. Most got started initially to improve the runtime on notebooks or power tools. A raft of explosions and recalls, however, have also pushed safety to the forefront.

The popularity of hybrid and electric cars has also juiced the market. Last week, A123 Systems, which makes lithium ion batteries for plug-in hybrid cars, announced it had raised $40 million more in venture capital funds.

Boston-Power has been one of the more noteworthy new entrants in part because the somewhat secretive company, which came out of semi-stealth mode late last year, employs many scientists and executives, like Lampe-Onnerud, who have worked in the battery industry for years. Along with showing off the battery publicly for the first time this week, Boston-Power also announced it closed a second round of funding for $15.6 million.

There is no magic silver bullet inside the Sonata, Lampe-Onnerud said. Instead, the battery differs from conventional notebook batteries through a large number of design tweaks.

"We understand the system. We don't have a killer chemical," she said.

The can, or outside casing around the battery cells such as such as Hp 367759-001 battery, Hp PM579A battery, Hp Pavilion DV4000 battery(Hp dv4000 battery), Hp Pavilion ZE2000 battery(Hp ze2000 battery), compaq Presario M2000 battery(compaq m2000 battery), Compaq Presario V2000 battery(compaq v2000 battery), is made from a metal alloy that is stronger than the iron cans used with notebook batteries and thus will remain intact, in the case of a thermal reaction, or fire, according to the company.

Boston-Power also spent a lot of time on the interrupt system, which prompts the battery to shut down permanently if there is danger of a reaction. (Replacements are covered by a three-year warranty, which Lampe-Onnerud says is longer than the industry average.) The company can't guarantee the batteries will never have problems, but it has added safety features not seen in ordinary batteries.

"If it is really damaged, I don't want it to work again," she said.

At the same time, the battery generally meets the performance characteristics of conventional batteries on the market today.

HP is likely the first customer, according to Lampe-Onnerud. A contract to put the battery inside a notebook has yet to be signed, but it's possible a notebook with a Boston-Power battery could hit the market by summer, she said. John Wozniak, an HP distinguished technologist, will appear with Lampe-Onnerud during the Demo presentation.

An HP representative said the company has been testing the batteries and is pleased with the results, but added that further testing will occur. A notebook containing the batteries potentially could come out this year, the representative added, but nothing has been signed and, again, further testing will occur.

Typically, large manufacturers move slowly and conservatively when adopting new components, and then introduce them on a limited basis.

The Sonata will sell for a premium, but Lampe-Onnerud would not disclose details on pricing.

The big challenge facing Boston-Power now is whether it can move into high-volume manufacturing. The company already has an alliance with a large Chinese contract manufacturer.

While Lampe-Onnerud was somewhat tight-lipped about how Boston-Power's product differs from conventional batteries, a patent search indicates that one change will involve altering the chemistry of the cathode. Currently, cathodes are made from lithium cobalt compounds. The July 2005 patent, suggests swapping that out for lithium nickel materials.

More information can be found under a second patent from February 2005. Although a company's patents can lead to future products, there is no guarantee that a correlation exists, and Boston-Power has several pending, unpublished patents.

HP/Compaq to recall notebook batteries that can catch fire

The Houston-based company revealed that batteries contained inside its Armada E500 and V300 notebooks can short-circuit, causing the notebooks to overheat, smoke and even catch fire. The defective battery packs were sold worldwide with the two notebooks but also as separate items. So far, only one problem has occurred, the company said.

On Oct. 13, Dell recalled 27,000 notebook batteries after it discovered that the batteries could short-circuit and ignite notebooks. Sanyo Electronic manufactured the batteries contained in the Dell notebooks.

A Compaq spokesman said the two incidents were unrelated. Sony, not Sanyo, manufactured Compaq's battery. Nonetheless, analysts and others no doubt will begin to question whether notebook manufacturers are pushing the design envelope.

In recent years, manufacturers have increased the power requirements of notebooks with features such as larger screens and DVD drives. At the same time, they have pushed to reduce the size and weight of laptops.

Engineering work has also been focused on getting more life out of batteries such as Hp 367759-001 battery, Hp PM579A battery, Hp Pavilion DV4000 battery(Hp dv4000 battery), Hp Pavilion ZE2000 battery(Hp ze2000 battery), compaq Presario M2000 battery(compaq m2000 battery), Compaq Presario V2000 battery(compaq v2000 battery). All this nipping and tucking has effectively led to more power surging through smaller computers, which are selling in record numbers.

"It is a little bit of the growing pains of notebooks becoming more popular," explained Matt Sargent, an analyst with ARS. Once a niche product, notebooks have become a mass market commodity and invariably are picking up some of the negative characteristics associated with mass-produced goods.

These sort of problems, Sargent added, will likely continue to crop up as manufacturers plan to increase the number, as well as the performance, of laptops.

"The power requirements have gone up and notebooks are becoming more performance oriented," he said. "Any time you get something more complex, the opportunity for problems to come up increases."

Compaq said the the defective batteries were manufactured between June 2 and July 10. The company warned that customers should stop using these notebooks immediately and consult a Web page concerning the recall for more information.

The company said the problem came to light in late August when a customer reported a problem. Compaq contacted Sony, which then confirmed a problem existed, a Compaq spokesman said. The Compaq spokesman added that Sony is paying for the recall.

Customers affected by the defect will be eligible to receive two free battery packs for each recalled battery. There will be no cost to Compaq customers for the recall and replacement program.

Argument 3 of Three dispute of the Notebook battery

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist
of the Hp laptop battery   First post by: www.batterystores.ca

Notebook batteries due to the high cost of belonging to the “consumables” that there is a lot of controversy over the use of.

With the gradual popularity of notebook computers, notebook computers on all the attendant problems, in a variety of media, the most controversial number of notebook batteries to the proper use of methods, some article said that the use of personal experiences notebook batteries, while others claimed expert guidance, all kinds of stories are, many argue.

The author is an ordinary notebook users, although not experts, but has many years experience in the use of the notebook, I found through friends dozens of university students using a laptop, so that they talk about their notebook battery life experiences, coupled with their own experience that summed up what we as a reference to the hope that can give us some help.

Argument 3:

How to charge?

Point of view 1: battery power should always be all used up, so that consumption of notebook computer to shutdown automatically recharge every time must be filled.

Perspective 2: the battery is no need to use the time to deliberate about, would like to use when filling the filling.

Survey: Most students said that the first point of view unnecessary to automatically shut down and then used as filling, but also not the second point of view, it is free of charge. Are generally used when the batteries need charging when the computer prompts further charge, of course, can be prompted to set the time, the default is to 3%.

Proposed method: The authors suggest that the majority of the students with the methods of approach are the same. In fact, regardless of the notebook to use nickel-metal hydride or lithium battery such as Hp DP390A battery, Compaq PP2100 battery, Compaq Presario R3000 battery(Compaq r3000 battery), Compaq Presario X6000 battery, Hp Pavilion ZV5000 battery(Hp zv5000 battery), Hp Pavilion ZV6000 battery(Hp zv6000 battery), Hp Pavilion DV1000 battery(Hp dv1000 battery), Hp PF723A battery, these batteries have a memory effect is, the nickel-hydrogen batteries have a memory effect is obvious, but the lithium will have the same memory effect, but its memory effect than Ni-MH small number of them . On the memory effect of lithium is not only irresponsible exaggeration business advertising is completely misleading.

Since then the battery has a memory effect when charging it should be noted that as far as possible and then run out of charge, but said there is no need to deliberate to the computer must automatically shut down, so did not use up what was so bad (because the notebook has a rechargeable battery discharge protection, automatic shutdown general notebook battery has not yet reached the standard discharge protection), but you do not feel so tired? In fact, less than 3% charge on the good in this way, there will certainly be the memory effect than the natural wear and tear, it should be nothing.

As for the second charge would like to charge on the point of view, the author is completely disagree, I have already mentioned the laptop battery, whether nickel or lithium hydroxide, which have a memory effect, so if the battery life in this way would be substantially shortened.

Nettop follows netbook

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist

I was recently offered a one-hour exclusive interview with Intel Corporation right after the launch of the Intel Atom processor.

"Why launch the new Atom when it has been around since Computex in June, and so many different netbook models based on this processor are already in the hands of consumers?", was the first question I asked Ajay Mathur, Intel's regional marketing manager for Southeast Asia. Budi Wahyu Jati, the country manager for Indonesia, was also there to accompany him.

Intel’s downsized Atom processors come in three different types. The chips are smaller than a thumbnail but contain 47 million transistors. (JP/Zatni Arbi)

It turns out that Intel has three different Atom processors -- the Atom 230 series for desktop computers called "nettop", the Atom 270 series for the "netbook", and the Atom Z5 series for mobile Internet devices.

Why nettop instead of desktop? It is easy to confuse a powerful desktop based on the Intel Core and the Intel Atom processors.

"We need to make the differences crystal clear to the consumers," said Budi.

So, what are these differences he was alluding to?

Technically, the main difference is this: The netbook processor has five levels of performance. Depending on the type of task the computer has to do, the power can be lowered and raised one level to conserve battery power such as Hp DP390A battery, Compaq PP2100 battery, Compaq Presario R3000 battery(Compaq r3000 battery), Compaq Presario X6000 battery, Hp Pavilion ZV5000 battery(Hp zv5000 battery), Hp Pavilion ZV6000 battery(Hp zv6000 battery), Hp Pavilion DV1000 battery(Hp dv1000 battery), Hp PF723A battery.

The Atom processor for nettop has only two levels, as there is no battery juice to worry about. However, both of these processor types are very energy efficient, as it is produced using a 45 nm fabrication. The chip itself is smaller than a thumbnail, but it contains 47 million transistors.

"If you have one or two desktops, the savings on energy costs may not be significant," Ajay said.

"But, if you have hundreds of PCs being used only for ordinary tasks, such as text document creation, spreadsheet calculation and presentation, then the cost savings as opposed to the full-featured PCs will multiply," he added.

We then discussed the netbook versus notebook and the nettop versus desktop computers. Both the nettop and netbook have Internet-readiness and affordability as their strong point. In the case of the netbook, the list also includes portability.

"If you want to run resource-hungry programs such as Photoshop and AutoCad, the netbook or nettop simply cannot cut it. You'll have to use a notebook or a workstation," said Ajay.

This should address the woes that a lot of computer users have had for so many years. There is no more reason for them to complain that they only use a fraction of their notebook's capability to perform their daily work.

The Mobile Internet Device (MID) may be a bit confusing. Why would we need another Internet-oriented device if we already have a laptop and a smartphone with us? The only explanation I have is that the MID is for those who think the netbook is still too bulky.

"If you go to a wedding party, you would not entertain the idea of bringing your netbook," responded Ajay, "It is on these occasions that the MID will come handy."

Another interesting piece of news that came out during the press conference that preceded my interview was that a growing number of local computer manufacturers were ready with their nettop.

"Many of these local nettop manufacturers are outside Jakarta," said Budi. There are now nettops produced in Makassar, Surabaya and even Kediri.

A nettop does not necessarily have to be small in size. Mugen, our long-time local brand, displayed a nettop built with a mid-sized casing during the launch event.

And, judging from the success of the low cost netbooks, we can forecast a rosy future for the nettop as well. The move toward Green IT environment, the skyrocketing cost of energy and power, and the realization that your computer does not have to be able to do everything (including cook your dinner) are just some of the factors that are driving their popularity.

By the way, Intel is not the only chipmaker that designs and manufactures processors for small notebooks. It has a competitor called Via Technologies. Via has also been making processors for Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). These are the processors used by HP in its 2133 Mini-Note and Ion (a local brand by Metrodata).

In my informal test of an Ion UMPC, the unit operated smoothly without a glitch. However, a lot of consumers feel more comfortable using the processors from Goliath.

At any rate, hopefully now you know when to buy a netbook instead of a notebook. Or, similarly, when you should buy a nettop instead of a desktop.

Argument 2 of Three dispute of the Notebook battery

Notebook batteries due to the high cost of belonging to the “consumables” that there is a lot of controversy over the use of.

With the gradual popularity of notebook computers, notebook computers on all the attendant problems, in a variety of media, the most controversial number of notebook batteries to the proper use of methods, some article said that the use of personal experiences notebook batteries such as Hp OmniBook 6000 battery, Hp F1739A battery, Hp Omnibook XE battery, Hp F2024B battery, Hp F2024A battery, HP XH260 battery, HP Pavilion N5200 battery, Hp Omnibook XE3 battery, Hp 346970-001 battery, Hp HSTNN-DB02 battery, Hp HSTNN-UB02 battery, while others claimed expert guidance, all kinds of stories are, many argue.

The author is an ordinary notebook users, although not experts, but has many years experience in the use of the notebook, I found through friends dozens of university students using a laptop, so that they talk about their notebook battery life experiences, coupled with their own experience that summed up what we as a reference to the hope that can give us some help.

Argument 2:

Unplug the external power supply when the battery?

1 views: the use of external power supply when the battery removed.

Perspective 2: the use of an external battery power when not removed.

Survey: Most students in the use of external power supply when the battery removed, only a small number of the use of external power supply when the battery is on top, which a small number of students are used in a number of international brand-name brand.

Proposed method: In fact, the battery is removed, the conflicts focused on the use of external power supply when the battery is charging up the issue. We should know that the number of battery charge and discharge is directly related to the life of lithium batteries in general set the number of charging and discharging are fixed number of charge cycles only 400-600 times, specially to improve the product but also 800 per charge on a battery a step forward to retirement. The first perspective is nothing more than fear of the use of power, the battery will be recharged on the top, not only increase the number of charge cycles and will have sufficient cause.

The second view is that the battery is full power on the computer, in the use of external power supplies will not recharge. In fact, both views have their right side, but also the wrong place. Because it is only the views expressed by individual people, not very comprehensive, after my investigation, many notebook manufacturers have to take into account the vulnerability of the battery and the product is added to the protection of the battery technology, and therefore the corresponding different brand notebook batteries charge of different protection technologies such as some large companies in this area is pretty good, such as: IBM, HP, Toshiba, Compaq, etc.. Which is considered the most thoughtful of hp, hp laptop battery discharge can detect the situation, ThinkPad notebook battery power only when less than 95% will be automatically recharged.

This can play a very good protective effect of the battery, and now have quite a number of other manufacturers to follow. Therefore, the battery like this, you do not need to use when drawing down, because only when the power is lower than 95% of the time it will charge. Nevertheless, such a long time if you are using your computer, or the battery removed for better long-running notebook because of the heat generated would cause some harm to the battery. However, some other “little brand” notebook batteries, may not enjoy such treatment because it has not done inside the battery protection technology.

I like to use a certain brand of notebook computers, if the battery is full on top, in the use of external power supply must certainly recharged, because the battery will have a loss when stored, it is impossible to achieve 100%, and if not 100% , power supply connected to the charge. Each access to external power supply to the battery charge is equivalent to one, although only a small charge will be the time. It is proposed that all the time in the use of machinery in accordance with their own circumstances, notebook manual check, choose whether to use an external power supply the hp notebook Battery removed.

Will HP’s Envy really make you envious?

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist

From time to time, world-class computer makers come up with a product that is fit only for a prince or princess.

We have the Ferrari Series from Acer as well as the Lamborghini VX1 from ASUS. It is now HP’s turn to show off a stately notebook.

They call their new family “HP Envy”, apparently in the hope that onlookers will envy those few who can afford it. Two models are available, the 13-inch and the 15-inch.

Certainly, both of these Envys are not meant to be mass market products like the HP Mini netbooks. Sales will be limited, and that seems to be exactly how they are intended to be.

To let you know why, here is the scoop on the prices: HP Envy 13 can be yours for US$2,666 while the price of the 15-inch model will set you back a mere $3,333.

Courtesy of HP Indonesia, I had the chance not only to touch but to use an HP Envy 13. It came in a special box, which reminded me of all the MacBook Pros I have played with.

My demo unit came complete with the slice secondary battery such as Hp OmniBook 6000 battery, Hp F1739A battery, Hp Omnibook XE battery, Hp F2024B battery, Hp F2024A battery, HP XH260 battery, HP Pavilion N5200 battery, Hp Omnibook XE3 battery, Hp 346970-001 battery, Hp HSTNN-DB02 battery, Hp HSTNN-UB02 battery and an external Optical Disk Drive (ODD, which is essentially a DVD-RAM drive).

The external design style is indeed very pretty and elegant. The casing is made of metal — aluminum and magnesium.

Unlike most notebooks today, the edges are slanted. The bottom part has a brushed, brighter silver color. The build feels extremely solid.

There are no feet underneath the body, as you are expected to place it on top of the secondary battery pack. This battery platform has the feet.

Unfortunately, there is no way we can raise the rear, so an equally expensive cooling fan may be the right companion for your Envy.

There is no question this notebook carries several innovative features. The USB connection of the ODD sends the audio signal into the system, so no extra audio cable is required.

The power plug is also made of metal, and I had to push a bit harder to insert it in place.

Under the lid, we will be immediately greeted by a rather uniquely designed multi-gesture touchpad.

Alas, I cannot say the touchpad functioned as beautifully as it looked, though.

For example, many of the latest notebook models today allow us to temporarily turn off the touchpad so that the cursor will not be jumping around as we type.

To disable Envy 13’s touchpad, you need to press the upper left corner of the panel.

I succeeded to turn it off only once. I guess I needed more time to read the manual and explore its capabilities.

When I turned this exquisite portable machine on, I was entertained by one of the best notebook screens. The colors were simply brilliant — even the old Elvis movie Loving You looked vibrant on the screen.

Again — unfortunately — the screen is covered from edge to edge with a clear but a bit glaring sheet, making it reflect the light and shadows in front of it.

It is now time to peep under the hood. The Intel Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor running at 1.86 GHz certainly makes the Envy 13 a great Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine.

I have no grip at all when it comes to responsiveness.

The speakers are on the left and side of the touchpad. Envy’s own audio capability was not as strong as I would love to have, though. Again, it may be because I did not know how to set it properly.

I do wish HP had not preinstalled so many utilities, as they tend to slow things down. For example, I had to try a few times to connect it wirelessly to my home network because I did not know which utility I was supposed to use.

Once the connection was established, however, the notebook was connected to my WLAN blazingly fast each time I turned it on.

There are some other features I found missing from this notebook. For example, it only has two USB ports. If we want to connect it to a network using a UTP cable, we first have to plug in a USB to RJ-45 converter.

I do not like extras like this, because they are usually lost or left at home just when we need them.

The ODD is of the slot type and I could not find a way to force a disc out in case it gets stuck inside due to peeled label. Therefore I always prefer the tray type.

More seriously, I think, are the shortcomings of the keyboard. First, HP seems to try to adopt Mac’s keyboard. The biggest problem is that key travel feels rather limited.

Next, the row of the function keys is smaller than the rest of the keyboard.

Then, instead of using the combination of Fn and one of the function keys, HP wants us press Ctrl-function keys to make the display brighter or dimmer, to pump up the audio or to mute it,

to start playback, to reverse or forward and to pause whatever we are playing.

The arrow keys are a bit too small, and I also failed to find the indispensable Home and End keys. I guess I really should have spent reading the user manual properly. Too bad, HP needed the unit back before I was able to do that.

What about weight and dimensions? The Envy 13 is a pretty lightweight work companion like the Timeline. It weighs 1.69 kilograms and it is surely more compact than the Timeline, which has an equally 13.1-inch screen.

As it is a premium product, if something happens to your Envy, you will get a premium service from HP. That is how confident they are of the quality of these notebooks.

Now, do you think others will envy you when you show them this exquisite and extravagantly costly notebook? I leave it to you to decide.

Argument one of Three dispute of the Notebook battery

Notebook batteries due to the high cost of belonging to the “consumables” that there is a lot of controversy over the use of.

With the gradual popularity of notebook computers, notebook computers on all the attendant problems, in a variety of media, the most controversial number of notebook batteries to the proper use of methods, some article said that the use of personal experiences notebook batteries, while others claimed expert guidance, all kinds of stories are, many argue.

Argument 1:

Activation of a new hp battery

1 views: we buy a new battery in, there will be more than 3 percent of electricity, the battery’s remaining power is used up, until the shutdown, and then use an external power supply charge. Charging time must be more than 12 hours, repeated three times to do in order to activate the battery such as Hp F2299A battery, Hp F3172A battery, Hp Pavilion ZT1000 battery, Hp Pavilion XZ200 battery, Hp Pavilion ZT1100 battery, Hp Omnibook XT1000 battery, Hp Omnibook XT1500 battery, Hp F2019 battery, Hp F2019A battery, Hp F2019B battery.

2 views: no need for batteries for 10 hours to activate the battery charge activity, in accordance with the normal charge-discharge-activated manner.

Findings: The author, after investigation, 24 college notebook users, the 18 is the second point of view, but this approach did not charge the battery for future use can hurt, of course, to exclude damage to natural factors. I own the same way, the new normal use the battery when a maximum of two and a half hours, the current over the past two years, the state of the battery is still good, still able to achieve more than two hours, so I have been satisfied.

Proposed method: I agree with the second point of view, according to available data indicate that activation of the battery should be completed in the factory, the notebook battery factory with a little electricity is the natural wear and tear in order to avoid damage to the battery. Should be activated battery protection circuit in the absence of circumstances, the circuit itself can be a lithium battery protection circuit, this circuit is designed in order to avoid over-charging and discharging batteries, general battery after full charge when the indicator goes out , non-rechargeable batteries into the power on, then you plug then plug the battery in the face of what to charge for?

The situation from the battery on the battery will be able to see there is no charge, and teach you a simple way to determine the battery can be there in charge when the battery will heat the phenomenon, when an hour after the battery is full of (power do not pull the plug), you try the battery again to see if the battery does not heat hot?

The results must be cold, because the state of battery charge and discharge is not of course, do not heat. Notebook manufacturers at the factory will be proposed that a new battery for more than 10 hours. This may allow some users have had the wrong point of view first, the author of this opinion is that notebook makers should take into account some new users to use a new battery when the charge does not fully grasp the skills, simply so that they charge 10 hours, so this should be the business of expediency.

Enhancing Lithium-Ion Battery Performance

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist
of the Hp laptop battery   First post by: www.batterystores.ca

Is your laptop starting to feel more like a desktop, constantly needing to be plugged in and recharged? This is a classic sign of capacity loss, where batteries become increasingly unable to carry a charge. Unfortunately, battery degradation is unavoidable. All batteries such as Hp F4098A battery, Hp F4809A battery, Hp F4812A battery, compaq 319411-001 battery, Compaq Presario 2100 battery(compaq 2100 battery), Compaq Presario 2500 battery(compaq 2500 battery), Compaq Presario NX9010 battery, Compaq Presario NX9000 battery have a lifespan, and with a life expectancy of 2-4 years, the Lithium-Ion laptop battery is no exception. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to slow the degradation process.

1. Avoid Excessive Heat

This is quite possibly THE most important factor that will influence how long your battery lasts. All manufacturers agree that it’s extremely essential to avoid excessive heat, which destroys the battery’s effectiveness. Apple recommends keeping your acer battery between 50F-95F when in use, with room temperature 70 F being ideal.

To keep your laptop–and its battery–within the recommended temperature range, use it on a flat surface that allows air to flow from the vents underneath. A cooling station is a great way to keep air circulating. You can get one for as little as $10 on Amazon. It’s best to keep your laptop off of bedding comforters, pillows, and clothing, these materials not only collect heat, but also prevent your computer from ventilating.

2. “When using wall current, is it OK to keep the battery in the laptop?” It depends.

Shoppers frequently ask if it’s okay leave the toshiba battery in your computer if it is plugged-in most of the time. This is a highly debated issue and there is a lot of inconsistent information on the web, even amongst manufacturers! Apple says you shouldn’t leave it in while Dell says it doesn’t matter. After examining the data out there, I’ve concluded that it depends on your computer usage habits.

You should remove your battery if your computer is ALWAYS connected to an external power source and frequently runs programs that require a lot of computing power (e.g. games, video editing software). Under these circumstances, there is usually a lot of heat coming from the laptop itself. If your battery is always next to this heat source, it will degrade quickly. This goes back to tip #1 above–avoid excessive heat.

According to BatteryUniversity.com, 40% capacity loss occurs in as little as 3 months if lithium-ion batteries are kept in extremely hot environments–above 140 F–while being fully charged.

If you’re always mobile, you shouldn’t worry about keeping your dell battery in your laptop–so long as it doesn’t get too hot. Ideally, it’s best to switch off between external power and battery power to “keep the electrons moving.”*

3. Your Battery Should Calibrated Every Month

The on-screen battery icon, which displays your battery’s current charge level, becomes less accurate over time. You might have experienced this firsthand–I definitely have.

One minute, your battery shows an hour of charge left, but just a few moments later, it’s down to 20 minutes.

Sometimes the battery meter may report a substantial amount of charge remaining, when in fact, the hp battery actually has much less than that. This can cause your laptop to shut down unexpectedly.

Calibrate the battery every month or two to keep the charge meter accurate.

The take-home point here is that lithium-ion laptop batteries prefer everything in moderation. They don’t like being too hot or too cold, and they shouldn’t remain fully charged or fully discharged for long periods of time. Although there will come a time when your battery will need to be replaced, using your battery efficiently will help to ensure that this occurs later rather than sooner.
