Emulex's "universal converged network adapter" platform represents a new direction for the company, one industry analyst told eChannelLine.

The company's new product, OneConnect, is a technical response to the ongoing headache in many IT shops of overloaded network traffic and a resulting sluggishness, stated Richard Villars, vice president, storage systems at IDC.

"It is a pretty straight forward development. There is a combination of trends that are all coming at once. One is the move of 10 Gigabit Ethernet into the data centers and the second is the pendulum swinging away from small volume servers dedicated to one application, to much larger intensive systems."

He stated it is becoming too difficult for systems to process both the work of virtual and physical servers containing intense applications and the network at the same time.

"I think for a lot of time there was a belief that servers were so underutilized for a host of reasons that you didn't have to worry about network overload."

The Emulex OneConnect UCNA platform supports Enhanced Ethernet protocols that support IP and storage networking, including TCP/IP, iSCSI, NAS and FCoE, and the major server architectures within a single hardware platform

The product essentially consolidates IP networking, Fibre Channel storage networking, and clustered low latency networking under one networking fabric, stated Shaun Walsh, vice president of corporate marketing at Emulex.

Simplified systems management and cost savings should result from the presence of fewer items such as adapters like Toshiba Portege M700 Adapter, Toshiba Satellite A10 Adapter, Toshiba Portege R600 Adapter, Toshiba Portege PPR65U Adapter, Toshiba Satellite A75 Adapter, Toshiba Qosmio G25 Adapter, Toshiba Qosmio F50 Adapter, Toshiba Tecra A1 Adapter, Toshiba Tecra A9 Adapter, Toshiba Tecra R10 Adapter, Toshiba Satellite R10 Adapter, switching and cabling in a converged network under OneConnect, he explained.

Universal networking is not a new concept, but this is the first product of its kind that is on the Ethernet, Walsh added.

"So, just as people have consolidated ten or 15 pizza boxes [i.e. single u rackmount servers] on a single physical server with virtualization, we can do the same thing with converged networks, where we can take three network fabrics and run them on all on the same physical piece of hardware."

Greg Schulz, senior analyst and founder of Storage I/O, noted that all of the converged adapter vendors (e.g. Brocade, Emulex, Qlogic and even Intel among others) have either made product announcements or statements of directions around their converged network and storage adapters.

"Look for more noise and activity as the industry shifts to a broader scale adoption of converged I/O, telephony, data and storage networking over the next couple of years."

Schulz stated that new connectivity architectures will be a great boon for common commercial and business applications.

Dell announces new generation of EqualLogic solutions

Today, Dell is announcing two new EqualLogic storage platforms, optimized versions of their PS4000 entry level SAN and their PS 6000 midrange product, which represent next-generation redesigns of these arrays.

"We have optimized the chassis for both our PS 4000 entry level PS 6000 midrange products," said Travis Vigil, executive director, Dell Storage. "This is the first major refresh of this hardware since its acquisition."

Like the PS 4000, the PS 4100 is aimed at SMBs and remote office locations. But whereas the PS 4000 has a 3U 16 drive chassis, the PS 4100 comes in 2U 24 drive with 2.5" drives (and a maximum of 21.6 TB of storage) and 2U with 12 x3.5" drives (with a maximum of 36 TB of storage)

"Because it has fewer drives than the PS 4000, this new chassis lets us be more aggressive on price points and will take us to a new part of the market," Vigil said. "There is also a 6 drive starting config compared to 8 on the PS 4000. This lets us get into the sub-$10,000 price range, and this has our partners very excited."

While the PS6000 comes in a 3U 16 drive form factor, the new PS6100 comes in a scaled down 2U with 24 2.5" drives and a maximum of 21.6 TB of storage in a single array, or as a 4U version with 24 3.5 inch drives or 4U 48 drive, with 72 TB in an array and 1.2PB in a single group. The PS6100 family is targeted at highly virtualized data center environments.

"The difference compared to the PS4100 is the scalability," Vigil said. It also comes with an SSD option, like its predecessor, and an 800% improvement in density over its predecessor. The new compact form factor also gives PS6100 customers the same performance for their typical workload using half the number of arrays, and 50 percent more expansion capacity when compared with previous generation EqualLogic arrays.

Vigil also stressed that both the PS 4100 and PS6100 adhere to the old EqualLogic selling feature of easy upgrades compared to some of its competitors.

"There are no forklift upgrades required," he said. "This works with the old arrays, and doesn't require data migrations. They can be easily inserted by the customer."

Dell also made a series of announcements of updates to storage software, of VMware-specific enhancements for EqualLogic, Compellent and PowerVault will ship in later in Q3 and Q4, and that that related products announced previously are now shipping, and that the previously announced EqualLogic FS7500 is now shipping.

The storage software updates are Dell EqualLogic SAN Headquarters 2.2 software and Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Microsoft 4.0. Dell EqualLogic SAN Headquarters 2.2 software provides real-time diagnostic information to enable customers to optimize and tune their system now includes new multi-site support.

"80% of our customers in larger SAN environments use this tool, which is also well suited to SMB needs," Vigil said.

Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Microsoft 4.0 has been re-designed to enhance the usability experience with new features including centralized data protection and more efficient management of multiple Microsoft hosts and virtual machines.

"A lot of our partners have found this software portfolio helps them sell the product," Vigil said. "It resonates with customers."

In support of the forthcoming VMware vSphere 5, Dell also introduced a new set of VMware specific enhancements for EqualLogic, Compellent and PowerVault which will roll-out through Q3 and Q4. For EqualLogic, Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for VMware 3.1 provides enhanced storage visibility and datastore management as well as improved performance and availability through tight integration with VMware vSphere 5, VMware vSphere Storage APIs for Storage Awareness, VMware Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler, and VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5. The latest EqualLogic firmware version 5.1, announced several months ago, also includes thin provisioning awareness for VMware vSphere to help users save valuable recovery time and help mitigate the risk of potential data loss.

"About 90% of our customers are doing some kind of virtualization and 80% of those are using VMware," Vigil said. "Providing the easiest possible deployment and management is very important to us. And EqualLogic has had a long historical focus on VMware integration."

The VMware announcements for the other Dell storage lines are Dell Compellent Storage Replication Adapter such as Dell PA-6 Adapter, Dell PA-9 Adapter, Dell PA-12 Adapter, Dell PA-10 Adapter, Dell PA-3E Adapter, Dell Inspiron 1545 Adapter, Dell Inspiron 1525 Adapter, Dell Inspiron 1420 Adapter, Dell Inspiron 1300 Adapter, Dell Inspiron 1318 Adapter for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5 and Dell PowerVault Integration with VMware vSphere 5. Dell Compellent Storage Replication Adapter for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5 supports automated failback from a disaster event and new workflows for planned migrations and downtime. Dell also is updating its Compellent plug-in support for VMware vSphere 5 to help customers more easily link their Compellent storage environment with virtualized resources. Dell PowerVault Integration with VMware vSphere 5 adds certification and enables customers to manage multiple PowerVault MD3200/MD3600 series of storage arrays from a single VMware vCenter Server instance using the vCenter Plugin for Dell PowerVault MD.

Finally Vigil noted that Dell has begun shipping the new EqualLogic FS7500, the company's latest NAS solution , that works with EqualLogic PS Series arrays.

"It has a highly virtual modern architecture, has a new load balancer and a tiering capability for EqualLogic that we haven't had before," he said.

The Dell EqualLogic PS4100 and PS6100 series are available immediately starting at $USD 9,499 USD and $USD 30,699 respectively. The Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for VMware is planned for release in Q3. The Dell EqualLogic Host Integration Tools for Microsoft and SAN Headquarters 2.2 software are planned for release in Q4.

As notebooks get older, it's common to encounter fickle power adapters. Over time, plugs and connectors start exhibiting quirks. We've seen cords that have to be held a certain way to maintain a connection. We've seen others that simply stop charging the battery altogether. Few of those problems are do-it-yourself fixes. From there, you can buy a straight replacement from your system's vendor. Or, you can go with a third-party solution. With a replacement, you know what you're getting. But a third-party's solution might include more features. It's a tough call, really. Before you go the third-party route, know that using non-factory equipment could very well void your machine's warranty, if it's still covered.

Asus says that, as long as the third-party adapter supports the right input/output voltage and power specs, your warranty remains intact. If the charger doesn't closely match the original adapter's specs, though, and damage occurs, the company may not honor your warranty. The reasoning is sensible. It would argue that the damage might have been caused by another company's power adapter, though it isn't clear how closely the third-party hardware would need to come to Asus' original equipment.

According to Dell, "all Dell-branded power adapters have to pass the Dell qualification process and necessary system-level certification." This means that only power adapters supplied by Dell or included with a Dell-branded solution are covered under the company's warranty policy. If damage occurs as a result of using a third-party adapter, your notebook isn't covered.

So, Where's The Problem?

Most AC adapters feature an LED built into the power brick. As you might imagine, this serves an actual purpose. If you plug in your notebook and that light doesn't turn on, something is wrong.

Most AC adapters come as two parts: the AC cable and the DC power brick/output cable. If you aren't getting power, and you don't have an LED or a two-part adapter, there are some steps you can take to check for damage. Obviously, you should only follow these steps if you have experience with power equipment and already know what you're doing.

First, set your multimeter to measure AC voltage. If your power adapter comes as two parts, disconnect the AC cable from the power brick and make sure it's plugged into the wall socket. Attaching the test leads to the AC cable, you should get a reading close to 120 V. Be careful when you do this; the two test leads should never come in contact with one another as current passes through them.

In order to test the DC side, set the multimeter to measure DC voltage, similar to the picture above. After reattaching the power brick and AC plug, check the voltage by touching the inside and outside of the connector.

Usually, you'll find a diagram on the wall wart that illustrates the positive and negative contacts. If your adapter doesn't have this, most manufacturers expose negative polarity on the sleeve and positive polarity in the center. If your connector includes a center pin, ignore it. Dell uses that pin to transmit a signal that verifies whether the adapter is one of its own or not. Other manufacturers use it to center the plug. Most of the time, the inner and outer sleeves are the parts of the plug that actually carry current.

If you aren’t getting a reading on the AC cable, you might just need a new cord. An auction site could be your solution there. If you aren’t getting a reading on the DC side, there's a good chance that you need to replace the entire brick.

Sony RoomLink Network Media Receiver And Home Server

Japanese giant Sony has also discovered wireless LAN for home networking and offers the RoomLink Network Media Receiver, a nifty compact solution for playing PC content on your TV and stereo via a network.

The Media Receiver from Sony, on the other hand, only has a (Fast) Ethernet interface to which a W-LAN-G adapter (not included) can be connected for wireless PC hook-up, which also requires a corresponding adapter such as Sony VGN-FZ Adapter, Sony PCG-505F Adapter, Sony PCG-R505 Adapter, Sony PCG-SR Adapter, Sony VGN-NR Adapter, Sony VGN-FZ11Z Adapter, Sony PCG-VX88 Adapter, Sony PCG-Z1A1 Adapter, Sony PCG-Z505HE Adapter, Sony VGN-AR Adapter. The Media Receiver cannot, however, freely access released audio and video content stored on a PC. Such files must first be input into a database using Sony's own software tools. Only then can they be played back on the television / stereo via the network. The receiver supports BMP, TIF, GIF, JPEG, PMG, ATRAC-3(+), Wave, MP3 and MPEG-1 and -2 file formats. Conclusion: Anyone planning to buy a new VAIO computer for the holidays anyway should certainly take a look at these two offers. But without Divx and Xvid, another network player makes more sense and is a lot cheaper.

Sony's RoomLink Network Media Receiver is only available in a package with one of two Sony Vaio desktop PCs - without a WLAN adapter. Both receiver and PC adapters must be purchased separately.

We recently took a 2000 mile road trip, and then flew back, allowing us to run a couple of benchmarks in hotels, a Jeep, and up in the air. Even though our test vehicle was limited by its 15 A fuse, that was more than enough current for Duracell’s 175 W Pocket Inverter. We tested the charge time from 0% with wireless networking disabled, using the lowest display brightness setting, and playing back a DivX-based movie.

Charging times are a double-edged sword. Ideally, you want a nice slow charge so that your battery lasts more than a few hundred charges. Fast charge times keep you away from the wall socket longer. but, in the long run, they cut down on the battery's health, too. Manufacturers utilize a variety of charging schemes to strike a balance. Usually, the rate of charge starts slowing down somewhere in the 80% to 95% range, which is why the charging time from 0% to 10% is faster than 90% to 100%.

Surprisingly, there is no difference between the three adapters like Apple iBook G3 14-inch Adapter, Apple M8576 Adapter, Apple MacBook 13-inch Adapter, Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch Adapter, Apple PowerBook 1400 Adapter, Apple M8243 Adapter, Apple M8942 Adapter, Apple A1021 Adapter, Apple A1184 Adapter, Apple A1036 Adapter, Apple iBook G4 14-inch Adapter, at least to charge to 100%. The battery in the notebook largely regulates the trickle charge, even when it's topping off from a constant current/constant voltage charging scheme. When you look at the charge from 5-10% (the only test available on the plane, given available time), Targus' Premium Laptop Charger seems to take a more cautious approach for the faster leg of the charge.

Using the Vostro 3300, we couldn't get the Duracell charger to work. It is the only charger of the three we tested that doesn't transmit an identification signal over the center pin. As a result, you can only power a Dell-based notebook; charging is completely disabled. There is no resolution to this problem, which you might experience if you buy your adapter on Ebay for a Dell notebook. Furthermore, you can't use a power inverter in tandem with the stock power adapter, and we're not sure why.

As a result, we had to run an additional benchmark using a 13.3" MacBook Pro to test the charging time of Duracell's charger compared to the other two. We ran it at maximum brightness, wireless enabled, and a custom benchmark for web browsing that mirrors our earlier RLUMark.

Overall, the Duracell product is basically the same flavor of laptop charger as the other two. Aside from its price, the main differences are found in its advantages. Duracell offers a three-year warranty compared to Targus' two years and the one-year coverage from Kensington. With that said, only Targus offers "Free Tips for Life." You simply have to pay for shipping on a tip that doesn't come with the original set ($5 for UPS Ground, plus tax if you live in California).

We wanted to throw in a benchmark from a generic Ebay charger, but the one we bought off some guy in Hong Kong died two days into testing. That goes to show that you get what you pay for; buy generic power equipment and you're putting the purchase and whatever it's connected to at risk. Sounds like reason enough for us to invest in a solid adapter, if we're going to buy anything at all.

Our review unit was wired for 802.11b using the MiniPCI slot, however, we were not provided with a MiniPCI 802.11b wireless card for our testing, so we cannot really give you any idea of how well the internal built-in antenna might perform.

The front of our test unit is where the C-Family Media Device Bay is located. Dell offers a variety of devices that can be placed into the C-Bay, including: 250 MB Iomega Zip drive; 2nd Hard Drive Bay; 24X/10X CD-ROM; 8X DVD; 8X4X24X CDRW; CDRW/DVD, which is 8X/8X/8X/24X; and, of course, it can also hold a second battery to double your battery life. The C-Bay in our test unit was compatible with C-Family Media Device family members, so if your IT shop already has a large stock of C-Family Media Devices, this is good news for you.

Next to the C-Bay, you will find a space for the 66 watt hour battery like dell Inspiron 500m battery, dell Inspiron 510m battery, dell Inspiron 600m battery, dell Latitude D500 battery, dell Latitude D505 battery, dell Latitude D510 battery, dell Latitude D520 battery, dell Latitude D600 battery, dell Latitude D610 battery, dell 312-0068 battery that is required by our test unit. Like past battery designs from Dell, the battery has the same form factor as previous Latitude battery designs. The battery includes a battery test indicator which has five lights to indicate the current charge level.

On the left side of our test unit is the Dell fixed optical bay. This bay can be pre-configured with a variety of options from Dell including: 24X/10X CD-ROM drive, which is standard; optional 8X DVD; optional 8X4X24X CDRW; and even the optional CDRW/DVD, which is 8X/8X/8X/24X. (Dell is also offering a CDRW/DVD 16X/10X/8X/24X drive that can be installed in select units.) This device is bolted to the unit, so although it could be exchanged, it is not recommended by Dell.

As you can see in this picture, it is possible to remove the fixed optical drive from the fixed optical bay in our test unit, but it isn't something that Dell would suggest. It uses a standard notebook style optical device, however.

In addition, on the left side you will find an integrated PC-Tel Modem 2304WT V.92 software modem. For network connectivity, we found the integrated 3Com 3C920 10/100 Fast Ethernet based NIC. Also, you will find the S-Video Out, which can be converted to RCA style composite out with the use of the supplied converter cable. The unit also has a connection for the standard locking Kennisington style devices. You will find a small speaker on both the left and the right side of the unit, to provide a full and rich sound.
