Do Kids Need a Laptop?

All laptop battery chargers are not created equal. I found this out when I went shopping for a new one and realized that some brands are better than others. I spent more than a few hours on many occasions shopping for them. The 3 tips below are what I found to be the best way to finding the right charger for you.

Tip 1- One of the first things that I failed to look for was, did the battery charger come with a warranty? This may sound trivial but, I’ve had to replace two battery chargers and neither of them came with any kind of long term warranty beyond 30 days. Considering this, I had to spend money on both batteries such as Hp HSTNN-DB02 battery, Hp HSTNN-UB02 battery, Compaq PP2100 battery, Compaq Presario R3000 battery(Compaq r3000 battery), Compaq Presario X6000 battery, Hp Pavilion ZV5000 battery(Hp zv5000 battery), Hp Pavilion ZV6000 battery(Hp zv6000 battery). Granted they did not cost much, it’s still money that I could have saved.

Tip 2- Look for whether the battery charger is compatible with your laptop. All chargers are not created equal as I stated earlier. I purchased one battery charger based on the AC voltage alone and it turns out the it was not compatible with the HP Pavilion dv6000. I just figured as long as the AC voltage matched up, I was fine.WRONG!

Tip 3- Make sure the extension cord fits the adapter I found this out with one of my chargers that I purchased. After talking to others, I came to the conclusion that this is a common situation many people have when they buy a new battery charger. My final choice was to call HP and order the original charger that came with the laptop. It made things so much easier. It did cost a bit more but I feel much better knowing that I got another HP adapter as opposed to a adapter similar too my original.

Following my 3 tips will save you a headache or 2 when it’s time to replace any of your laptop battery chargers. IF I followed my own advice I would not be on my 3rd battery charger. Also, when shopping around be sure to search online as well as offline. Prices vary and you might feel more comfortable buying offline do to the ability to take your laptop with you and try them out in the store.

Li-Ion BPS9 Sony Vaio Battery Review

Is it a good idea to invest in a Laptop Cooler Pad? Well, let us look at some of the things that can occur if you do not have a cooling pad.

The first thing that springs to mind is protecting the computer hard drive. Hard drive failure is probably one of the biggest fears for many regular computer users. This tiny little box stored away in the laptop holds all your data, photos, videos and important configurations. If the box fails, then you can pretty much say farewell to all that stored information, (unless you backed it up of course).

One of the main reasons for hard drive crashes is in fact overheating. All kinds of valuable personal or business data can be lost if your computer overheats and crashes. Trying to keep your laptop at an even temperature can be quite difficult with just the one built in internal fan. This is especially so if you use a lot of design or editing software.

Usually placed at the back of the computer the processor is another unit that needs to be kept cool at all times. This is the heart of your laptop, if this shuts down it is game over. Modern laptops run fast microprocessors that can generate a lot of heat. Without the necessary cooling system or bad ventilation the effectiveness will be reduced considerably. A hot laptop can suffer from reliability problems and a system that overheats can fail.

Now, if you are someone who regularly works off of your lap then take notice of this next bit. Laptop heat can cause skin burns. Yes, you read it right, actual burning of the skin. Let’s face it, if you have a laptop sitting directly on your lap and working continuously where is all the heat going to go?? As it is directly on your lap you can probably assume that any air vents cut into the laptop unit will most likely be blocked by your thighs. The heat will come straight out of those vents and blow directly onto your legs. Imagine if you were wearing shorts!!

Lastly, and this one is for all you men out there, laptop heat can reduce fertility. Not something you want to read about but it is a known fact that too much heat in a man’s nether regions can create problems later on if having children is part of his future plan. If you are one of these guys and have no choice but to work a laptop off your lap then I would strongly suggest getting a laptop cooler pad ASAP!

So now we know what kind of damage an overheating laptop can cause now we shall look at how to determine whether your laptop is too hot.

What Are The Symptoms Of Overheating?

If you are working away at your computer and suddenly the thing, without reason, shuts down then there is a high likelihood that the fail safe software in your laptop has shut everything down due to the temperature getting too high.

If you find that your laptop/notebook internal fan is constantly working at full speed then chances are that overheating is the cause.

If your computer automatically shuts down immediately after you have turned on a piece of software that requires a lot of work from the processor.

If your screen freezes and the infamous “blue screen of death” appears.

Hopefully the question of whether you should invest in a laptop cooler pad has been answered. I personally think that if I did not use a cooler pad my laptop would have been trashed a long time ago.

If you are interested in buying a cooler battery but not really sure where to start then go to Sony VGP-BPL2 battery, Sony VGP-BPS2 battery, Sony VGP-BPS3 battery, Sony VGP-BPS5 battery, Sony VGP-BPS8 battery, Sony VGP-BPS9 battery, Sony PCG-R505 battery, Sony PCG-V505 battery and Sony PCG-Z505 battery and read through the full reviews. Problem With New Battery in Sony Vaio Laptop

As we all know Skype is one of the pioneers in Internet telephony and it has enjoyed a steady stream of users worldwide on various hardware platforms like PC, other mobile devices etc. However, it is a well known fact that Skype can only be connected through a wifi connection on iPhone devices due to contractual obligations with Apple but however, they have started launching 3G connectivity recently with a free trial ending end of 2010.

This breakthrough is welcome news as users no longer need to scour for a wireless access point before making and receiving calls and they can do so anytime anywhere with a wireless data package from their mobile service provider. However, the breakthrough is not without it’s hitches as tests shown as there have been instances of poor reception and dropped calls and also connection failure issues amongst other things when it is logged into 3G network as compared to connecting through the wifi network as it is generally much stable in terms of call quality and reception as 3G networks are generally mobile in nature and may subject to mobile interference and other underlying factors.

Another bottleneck is that Skype will be levying a small monthly charge on the use of the 3G network after 2010 and while we understand that Skype is coming from an enterprise point of view, all the above teething issues will have to be fully resolved before levying the monthly charge to users to ensure their money worth spent and this is an issue for Skype developers to ponder upon before passing the bacon to consumers.

If you are interested in buying a cooler battery but not really sure where to start then go to Sony PCGA-BP1N battery, Sony PCGA-BP2NX battery, Sony PCGA-BP2NY battery, Sony PCGA-BP2R battery, Sony PCGA-BP2S battery, Sony PCGA-BP2T battery, Sony PCGA-BP2V battery, Sony PCGA-BP4V battery and Sony PCGA-BP71 battery and read through the full reviews. Also, you can compare units to see which one suits you best at our Sony Laptop Battery Online System.

What makes a good Laptop?

Now that you have an idea about what you want your laptop to look like on the outside, it’s time to consider what you’d like to see on the inside. If you’re buying this laptop merely to use programs like Microsoft Office, an internet browser and iTunes then you’re not going to need a whole lot of power from your system. Laptops on the retail market these days come equipped with Windows 7 as an operating system, and unlike their Vista counterparts a couple years back will come designed to handle running the operating system smoothly. That being said, a good benchmark to set for your system will be 4GB of RAM; preferably DDR3, A quality dual core processor (avoid the Intel Celeron series for example), and then a hard drive based off how much you plan to store on your computer. Typically hard drives from 250 – 500GB are the most commonly found on lower to mid ranged laptops, and that should be more than sufficient storage space.

If your plan is to use more intensive programs, such as Graphic Design software, Music editing software, or anything else that will create an intensive load on your system you’ll want to take a closer look at your Processor. A processor that boasts dynamic performance enhancement, such as the Multithreading feature offered in the Intel i series of processors are a good choice for this. The cores of the i3-i7 processors are designed to divide tasks up into threads within each processing core, allowing your system to think it has more cores to work with, the end result being that it can force a little extra power out of your system in a pinch. Another handy feature to watch for is the size of your L2 and L3 cache. The larger the cache, the more your system is able to do without slowing itself down to access more distant memory sources, and that means quicker response times to whatever you need to access.

If you’re buying this system specifically for gaming, or for High Definition multimedia or 3D modeling, you’ll want to consider the Graphics Card your system will come with. For the most part, a 1GB of video memory in the graphics card should be more than powerful enough to handle whatever your needs are, but it would be wise to check the specific requirements of the game or software you’re installing, and be sure that the features you need are included in the design of the card.

Finally, the battery(HP XH260 battery, HP Pavilion N5200 battery, Hp Omnibook XE3 battery, Hp 346970-001 battery, Hp HSTNN-DB02 battery, Hp HSTNN-UB02 battery, Hp DP390A battery, Compaq PP2100 battery and Compaq Presario R3000 battery) life of the laptop could be important as well. If you plan on using the laptop in a lot of places where there are no power sources, you’ll want a laptop with a longer than average battery life. And considering the average battery life of a laptop varies from 2-4 hours, this can be a very important decision for the commuting over-achiever or social butterfly.

The Hard Drive of a Laptop stores all your data.

Where to go from here?

So you’ve finally decided on a laptop that fits all your needs. It’s the right size, has the NUMPAD on the side, doesn’t weight too much and it’s a sweet shade of charcoal gray. Now that you’re ready to dish out on the system, it’s time to consider everything else you’re going to need to work at maximum efficiency.

For software, consider again what you’ll be doing with your laptop. If you’re ever planning to take it online by any capacity (and who isn’t, these days) then you’re going to want a reputable Antivirus program. One of the best right now is from a company called Kaspersky. As of this writing, it has been found to locate and quarantine/remove the largest library of malicious software of any Antivirus in the retail market. The internet security package also includes metrics to protect your personal identity online from online phishers. This can be important if you access your bank information or log into sensitive company assets over the internet.

Another must have for business and school is the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft Office comes in many packages, and the one that is right for you depends on what you need for work. Most users will find the Home and Student offering to be enough, featuring Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. This allows you to create professional documents and resume’s, organize slide show presentations, and create powerful spreadsheets. Other popular programs included in other Office suites are Outlook, a program used to organize e-mail in ways most internet services can not, and Access, a program that can create Databases for organizing and storing information on anything from sales records to your Elvis Presley collectibles. Make sure when you’re purchasing a copy of Microsoft Office that it has every program you need to be successful.

Graphic designers or photography buffs will want to get their hands on photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. A music producer will need a program to allow them to record, edit and store music. Gamers will need to shell out for their latest digital fix, and Web Designers will likely want to purchase a license for Macromedia Flash or Adobe Dreamweaver.

What about Accessories?

So now you have a laptop and software to go with it. What else could you possibly need? Well for starters, what do you plan on carrying it in? Laptop bags come in several varieties. Slipcases for storing your system in a backpack or briefcase, messenger bags for carrying your laptop and a couple needed accessories, and larger briefcase style bags to carry your laptop along with work materials. They come in all sizes to accommodate a laptop of any size, so be sure the bag you’re buying will hold the 17″ wide screen your purchased.

Another accessory to add to your list is a wireless mouse. Most people (myself included) do not like the touch pad that comes with your laptop, so by plugging in a receiver into a USB port of your laptop you can replace that dodgy pad with a traditional mouse, AND you don’t have to untangle 4 feet of wire first, either. Other input peripherals include a NUMPAD if your laptop keyboard doesn’t have one, or a Tablet for sketching or signing documents.

If you plan on listening to a lot of music, voice chatting, or even just taking verbal notes for your to do list, you may want to consider purchasing a USB Headphone/Microphone combination. If you want to add video conferencing, or creating video blogs to that list you’ll want to purchase a web camera as well. (keep in mind that many laptops come with a camera and/or mic built into the screen). If you’re storing a large amount of data, or storing sensitive data you can’t afford to lose, invest in an external hard drive. They store at least as much data as your laptop and can even back up your entire system on a scheduled basis. Plus, they’re simple to install and can even be portable, to take with you wherever you go.

If you’re going to be printing a lot and working in different areas of the house, a wireless printer is a good addition to any laptop purchase. They’re no longer more expensive than their wired counterparts, and the added range and flexibility more than make up for the money spent. Make sure you weigh the cost of the printer with the cost and yield of it’s ink cartridges. Typically the cheaper the printer, the costlier the ink to sustain it.

Finally, if you’re not yet wireless at your home, there’s no better time than now. Your laptop will come with a wireless adapter built right into it, so all you’ll need to pick up is a Wireless Router. For the cost of technology, spend the extra $10 or so dollars and opt for a Wireless N system. It has a faster wireless download speed and a much larger signal range, allowing you to update your Facebook status from the bedroom, or destroy your best friends Town Hall from the comfort of your lawn chair. Keep in mind that just about any wireless router you purchase comes with at least 4 Ethernet ports so your wired desktop and/or gaming consoles can still be connected to the network as well.

Most of your accessories will connect to your laptop using a USB connection.

The Router Goes Where?

So now you’ve finally made your big shopping list of everything you’re going to need to get back to school in style this year, and looking at the list you’re starting to wonder how you’re going to get it all installed, set up and be ready in time for the start of your classes. It’s time for you to consider the last step of buying a new system…

Any retailers worth their salt can offer you assistance in setting up a new laptop. They’ll power it on, install your hardware titles, install your printer’s drivers and in some cases they can even go as far as driving to your home and setting up your wireless network. If the idea of configuring your home computer, new laptop, Xbox 360 and Ipod Touch to a single network frightens you, it may save you hours of frustration to pay and have it all professional installed and configured.

One last thing to consider as well is protecting your investment. If you’re starting from scratch, you’re likely spending close to a thousand dollars on your new set up, and in some cases even more than that. And though the idea of adding another expense to the already daunting list you’re prepared to shell out may seem like a bad idea, the next consideration can literally save your butt in a pinch. What I’m talking about is the dreaded Extended Service Plan. Unfortunately I think that used car salesman and and commission based Electronic stores have given ESP’s a bad rap. The Extended Service Plan actually exists to protect your investment from the limited warranty provided from the major electronic manufacturers.

The One Year Limited Warranty provided from companies like HP or Dell cover manufacturer’s defects only. Meaning that unless the issue can be traced directly to being a flaw in the manufacturing of the product, HP or Dell will deny you any assistance or monetary compensation for the system. And believe me, they will do anything to convince you that they didn’t mess up. What does that mean for you? Well, without assistance from an Extended Warranty, odds are good that you’re stuck with that laptop with the dead hard drive and faulty screen.

The extended warranty however, will protect your Laptop against any and all damages and defects incurred during the life of the warranty, typically between 2-4 years. This means that if a year and a half down the road the cheap hard drive that HP placed in your laptop dies out, you can call the company that you purchased your warranty from and either get your laptop repaired, get it replaced, or get your money back (less the money spent purchasing the warranty). And in most cases, the cost of the warranty is less than even the cost of buying the replacement part, let alone the cost to have it replaced.

Prolong the Battery Life of Your Netbook

Today’s advance technology creates all things tinier and more powerful. The development of netbook and its quality gives people a lot of purchase options to choose from. That may be a difficult conclusion to do because creator of this product construct it with a lot of different features. Netbooks has a lot of different prices too, therefore you will be having tough situation in making a decision of the type of mini laptop that you will have to buy. The time that netbooks were created, they are totally of great price. Yet nowadays are not like before, because you can buy netbooks now in a very low price because of high competition that almost all people have the possibility to afford buying netbook computers.

Prior to buy a mini laptop, first you have to pay attention on the things that most fits your necessity. Of course, the price is certainly the most important part of all. To do this, you will have to compare the prices from different stores where you are shopping. Second importance, you should pay attention to the specs of the laptop. Like for example the screen inches, the memory capacity, the battery such as Toshiba PA3395U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3250U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3356U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3291U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3506U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3591U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Portege 4000 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A10 Battery and Toshiba Satellite A100 Battery of the laptop you will going to buy, the keyboard, the Operating System, wi-fi, and much much more…

About the OS or Operating System of the laptop that you will have to buy, it’s best to select the OS that offers much bigger memory capacity. After you decide which laptop that best suits your needs, be sure not to forget the manual of the laptop that you will have to buy. This is very important for the maintenance and upgrading of your laptop. The manual gives the full details about your laptop. It constitutes several features, such as maintenance, upgrading, functionality, customer service and a whole lot more.

There are dozens of several prices for mini laptop ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. But don’t purchase if you think the price given to you are unreasonable for the specs of the laptop. You ought to think about on a typical laptops. Specialists advices brands of notebook that are well known such as Toshiba, Asus and Acer. These notebook brands provides greater performance of mini laptop computer as well as offering excellent notebook PC repair guides. If you will buy a laptop you have to pay attention to the last part which is the laptop repair guides because this is where you based when it comes to maintenance and repairing of your laptop. Your laptop repair manual gives you the ideas of what you should do if your laptop will not perform the way it used to be. Also, it provides complete details about the address and contact number of the company where your laptop be hand over in case of malfunction. Laptops the Most Suitable For Desktop Computers

Since their introduction, laptops are proving to be one of the most useful devices so far. They are like a boon for the professionals, students, business people and the people who are always on move. Though desktop computers are equally efficient, laptops are more useful because they offer mobility, flexibility, portability, power and cost effective. However, when you plan to buy a laptop, you must be aware of your computing needs, what is available in the market, brands and models of the laptops. Read below to know about a few things you need to know when buying a laptop.

The most important thing you should decide before you a laptop is your computing needs and requirements. What are you going to use your laptop for? It will help you set a budget for your laptop and the features you should look for. For instance, if your work involves only the use of Excel and Word and Internet, you do not need a high specification laptop. If you need advanced multimedia features, you will require a laptop with high resolution, advanced graphic cards, memory storage and more. The difference in features will create a great difference in budget also.

Once you determine your needs, you can look for particular specifications in your laptop computer. If you want a good laptop with basic features, you should look for a laptop having at least 1.75 GHz processor. If you want to have the latest Windows Vista or more, you should look for a laptop with at least 1GB memory for your basic computing needs. A minimum hard disk space of 80 GB is ideal as you are getting increasing number of advanced applications.

One more application which is sort of must is the DVD combo drive which can read DVD discs and burn CDs. If you are fond of listening good music, make it a point to test its sound quality. If you have to struggle to listen to the music even when the volume is full, it’s not your kind of laptop. In addition, consider the Toshiba Laptop Battery life too. As you will be using your laptop while traveling or away from home or office, it needs to have strong battery life include these Toshiba PA2487U Battery, Toshiba PA3107U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3383U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3384U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3285U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3191U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3166U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3331U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3098U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3084U-1BRS Battery and Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS Battery.

Another thing you need to consider is the screen quality and its size. These days there are laptops with different screen sizes. A matte screen is preferred over the glossy screen. A wised aspect screen is best suited for working with tings like image editing, excel sheet or watching movies. You can choose from several popular laptop brands such as dell laptops, Lenovo laptops and others. You can compare their features and prices to help you decide to have the best laptop.

Will Netbooks EVER Find A Home In Business?

As regular readers of InformationWeek SMB know, I'm pretty much obssessed with figuring out the business uses of netbooks. And I recently came across a Forrester Research study from last fall that offers some useful insights.

The study, called Rewrite the Netbook Story For Business Technology Buyers, by Jennifer Belissent, PhD., concentrates mainly on netbook use in emerging markets. It says the combination of newly available broadband access, the rise of Web-based software, and cost-conscious businesses makes netbooks a perfect choice for businesses in those markets.

But what about here in the U.S., where netbooks remain a largely consumer-based phenomenon? In most cases, even netbooks used in business settings are still being bought by individuals, not companies.

Bellisent acknowledges that "their business value proposition remains unclear." But she thinks it's mainly a marketing problem: "Many business buyers haven’t quite figured out what to do with them, in part, because netbook marketers haven’t quite figured out how to position them."

True enough, I suppose, but maybe that's because we're all still trying to figure out where they fit into the business world. As Bellisent says, most people think of "netbooks as more of a luxury companion device, as the device that parents give to their children, or as a cheap device for students in emerging markets," not as a business machine. Only 23% of U.S. adults are interested in netbooks as a replacement for a more expensive laptop.

To change that, Bellisent users emerging market lessons to suggest new ways to think of netbooks in business settings:

1. Not as a step down from a full-size laptop but as a step up from a smartphone.

2. As an energy efficient alternative to a full-size laptop.

3. As the lowest cost form of PC.

4. As a terminal to access on-demand business applications.

5. And, notably, as an SMB device. According to Forrester’s Enterprise And SMB Hardware Survey, North America And Europe, Q3 2009, small businesses are more interested in and more likely to purchase netbooks than are larger enterprises. Of those surveyed, 14% of companies with 20 to 99 employees have purchased netbooks, compared with 9% of enterprises with 1,000 to 4,999 employees, 6% of very large enterprises with 5,000 to 19,999 employees, and just 4% of Global 2000 companies with 20,000 or more employees.

Unfortunately, the study doesn't explore why SMBs are more interested in netbooks than are enterprises. Is it all about the price, or are there other factors in play?

According to Bellisent, netbooks will find increasing home in business settings if netbook vendors can do a few things:

"Identify and develop use cases and value propositions" for netbooks. Well, yeah. But figuring out those use cases and value propositions has always been the big stumbling block, right?

"Develop new business models." One example she offers is bundling the netbooks with financial services delivered online. In the U.S., we've seen telcos begin bundling netbooks with wireless broadband services, but I have yet to see figures on whether this is making a dent in business markets.

"Partner with new channels to target specific audiences." As above, she suggests banks, healthcare, and other vertical industries.

"Review market requirements and address needs with products and pricing." Too often, Bellisent argues, netbooks have been developed not based on customer needs but on avoiding cannibalizing other products. Change that, and netbooks will find new buyers. Maybe so, but I'm not sure that I buy the argument. If you ask me, companies like ASUS and MSI have already been doing their best to push the netbook envelope, and mainstream makers like HP and Dell have already been forced to follow suit. (Intel and Microsoft, on the other hand, do seem worried about cannibalization.)

Ultimately, Bellisent establishes some key points about netbooks and businesses, but she hasn't quite cracked the nut. Unless and until netbooks evolve to the point where they don't require dramatic compromises in computer experiences, they're going to find business uses only where their advantages -- light weight, long battery life, low cost -- outweigh their disadvantages of slow performance and small screens and keyboards. And that's not going to happen as long as Intel -- which doesn't make that much on the Atom processors that power most netbooks -- and Microsoft -- which seemingly hasn't settled its netbook strategy beyond wanting to move them from Windows XP to Windows 7 -- remain committed to keeping netbooks as adjunct PCs.

Technology To Make Lithium-Ion Batteries Safer

We've all heard of laptop or phone batteries catching fire, or have even seen video of a battery igniting. Dell, Sony, Samsung and others have all issued battery recalls in recent years to take batteries out of circulation that were more prone to catching fire. It is not something you want going on in your pocket where you have your cell phone or on the tray next to you in an airplane. A Taiwanese researcher claims to have a new material that will reduce or eliminate the possibility of these scenarios.

According to NetworkWorld, lithium-ion batteries such as Toshiba Satellite A70 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A75 Battery, Toshiba Tecra 8000 Battery, Toshiba Tecra 8100 Battery, Toshiba Tecra 9000 Battery, Toshiba Tecra 9100 Battery, Toshiba Satellite 1900 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A60-662 Battery, Toshiba Satellite A65 Battery and Toshiba Satellite 2100 Batteryare safe unless they are damaged or are defective in some way at the time of manufacture. That damage can cause the battery to overheat and catch fire. The solution is to inject a polymer called self-terminated oligomers with hyper-branched architecture (STOBA) into the battery. Of course, that sound so obvious today doesn't it?

STOBA is designed to suppress the heat, thereby preventing the flare-ups even on a damaged battery. This technology is already being tested in batteries in electric vehicles. Next up is to try it in portable electronics like phones, laptops and MP3 players.

I'll be glad to see this come to market. Like any computer, today's smartphones can lock up and do crazy things. I've had several over the years have some app, unbeknownst to me, take over the CPU causing the battery to get hot trying to keep juice flowing to the processor. Had the battery been defective or damaged and left alone long enough, it might have suffered the fate of a total meltdown. A quick soft reset solves the problem, but the battery takes several minutes to cool back down to a normal temperature.

Laptop Batteries Can Run For Three Years

The degrading run-time of notebook/mobile batteries may be a thing of the past, without waiting for fuel cells, if Boston Power's Sonata cells live up to their claims.

The rechargeable batteries we use in our laptop computers -- ditto in our mobile phones and many other portable devices -- get marginally better, in terms of product evolution. Compared to the NiCAD and NiMH notebook batteries of yore, they're a noticeable improvement; for example, it's been a while since we've had to worry about the "memory effect" that meant being careful to charge batteries completely, to avoid capacity creep-down.

But compared to what we need, today's Lithium-Ion (LiON) batteries aren't there yet.

They don't hold a full day's charge, or they do at the expense of adding bulk, weight and cost. They don't last as long as the rest of the notebook's components -- even if you don't use them; within a year or less, run-time seriously begins to degrade. And they take too long to charge.

And, lithium-ion batteries aren't always safe, and have disposal issues.

One company claiming a better battery -- that is, the chemistry for a better battery -- is ZPower, using silver-zinc, which, according to ZPower, can pack 40% more juice, and be safer to use and dispose of.

However, ZPower doesn't seem to have any actual product yet, despite "This year for sure"-type (with apologies to Bullwinkle T. Moose) claims for the past year or so. The web site doesn't list any products, the latest press release is dated September 2009... even mobile fuel cells have actually come to market ahead of ZPower.

But at least one company has actually delivered product: Boston Power, including its Sonata batteries such as Toshiba PA3084U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3250U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3356U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3291U-1BAS Battery and Toshiba PA3591U-1BAS Battery for use in notebooks and other portable/mobile devices and applications, and Swing batteries such as Toshiba PA3331U-1BAS Battery and Toshiba PA3098U-1BAS Battery, "suitable for electric vehicles, industrial equipment, and utility applications."

There aren't as many vendors offering Sonata-type batteries as I'd expect. HP started offering some in early 2009, either as an accessory pack or (for a model sold in Europe) shipped as the standard battery. According to Boston Power, HP offers them, mostly as "the HP Long Life Battery Accessory," with fifteen commercial notebook models.

And Boston Power has just announced a deal with Asus, offering them standard with ASUS B Series notebooks.

Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, where run time degrades within two years or even one, says Sally Bament, VP of Marketing, Boston Power, Boston Power's maintain like-new run time for over three years: "Our chemistry guarantees that like-new run time for well over three years, based on cycle life."

Is that really the case? I don't know...but HP and Asus both offer three-year warrantees on the Sonata batteries, guaranteeing performance, according to Bament.

Also, says Bament, "We support 90% charge in 90 minutes, and we can charge even faster, the cell can charge to 80% in 30 minutes."

"There's no question that the longer battery life is important, and so is fast charge, once you have used a notebook long enough where these aren't the case," says analyst Bob O'Donnell, Vice President, Clients and Displays, IDC. "The challenge for Boston Power is that they are a small supplier, and larger vendors like HP often want to second-source, which isn't an option here."

According to Bament, battery capacity, and pricing from Boston Power, are comparative with traditional LiON batteries... although in terms of price, Bament notes, "The vendor may get a premium, with the three year warrantee." (Showing that some computer vendors have studied with the airline industry school of pricing.)

I find it interesting -- and unlikely -- that, if these batteries work as claimed, only HP and Asus have jumped on the electric bandwagon. I'd expect, at minimum, Apple, Lenovo, Dell... well, everybody.

Bament's response: "We have publicly announced Asus and HP at this time."

IDC's O'Donnell's point regarding second-sourcing is a reasonable explanation. I think that if I were running Boston Power, I'd be doing my dangdest to license the heck out of the technology, if need be.

Fortunately and interestingly, the rest of us don't have to wait for the next round of deals. Sonata batteries are available for Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and other notebooks, not to mention for digital cameras, camcorders, PDAs and more, through Dr. Battery.

Dr. Battery is a wholesaler; according to their marketing person, one of their U.S. resellers is LaptopCharge. Note, Dr. Battery has two battery families, the "Green Series," based on Boston Power tech, and their "Pro," which are the usual same old type of batteries. The Green Series are flagged on LaptopCharge's pages with "3 YR WARRANTY" (in red) while the Pro are flagged with "1 YR WARRANTY" (in green)... so be sure you're paying attention when you click.

Sadly, I didn't see Green Series for the netbook or digital camera I wanted to try them with... but I'm tempted to get one for my five-year-old IBM ThinkPad, whose main and secondary batteries no longer hold much of a charge, to say the least.

Anyway, if these batteries really do what they say they do -- granted, it'll take three years to fully test the no-degredation claim, although a year or so will start to tell the tale -- mobile productivity and TCO has just gotten somewhat better.

Fujitsu Battery Exchange Program FAQs

Why is Fujitsu replacing some batteries in certain notebook PC models?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in a recall program announced on October 23, 2006, has announced that certain Lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony Energy Devices Corp. of Japan, including some supplied to Fujitsu and used in LifeBook mobile computers, have the potential to overheat, posing a fire hazard to users. Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation has agreed to join their Sony battery recall program for customers in the United States, and its subsidiary Fujitsu Canada, Inc. has elected to extend a comparable program voluntarily to customers in Canada. By offering the Fujitsu Laptop Battery Exchange Program, both Fujitsu Computer Systems Corporation and Fujitsu Canada, Inc. wish to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our customers, and so we are urging all customers who have products that meet the criteria set forth in the guidelines to register, receive a replacement battery and return the recalled one to us as specified.

Are all Fujitsu notebook PC's affected?

No, because not all batteries used in Fujitsu notebook PC's are affected. Only those models which were sold with a battery sold to Fujitsu by Sony, and of those only a smaller group which had batteries made by Sony during particular date ranges, are affected.

If I have an affected battery, do I need to remove the battery from my Fujitsu notebook PC and run it on AC power?

Yes, if at all possible. If your LifeBook notebook has an affected battery Fujitsu advises that you use your computer with the battery pack removed. Shut down your computer, disconnect the AC adapter and then remove the battery pack. Connect the AC adapter again to use your computer.

If you choose, contrary to Fujitsu's advice, to continue to use your Sony battery while waiting for a replacement, you can reduce risk by taking the following precautions:

Do not use the LifeBook simultaneously on battery power with the AC adapter; disconnect the AC adapter from the computer if using battery power

Operate the computer only on a flat surface, and never on surfaces which retain heat (such as towels, blankets, clothing) or heated surfaces

Cease using battery power if temperature exceeds usual heat levels

Remove the battery at all other times

After you receive and install your replacement battery, you may resume normal use of your LifeBook.

I'm confused. Earlier I understood it was still OK to use my Fujitsu notebook PC on an affected Sony battery. What has changed?

Previously, we had understood that the affected Sony batteries would not result in any adverse incident when used in Fujitsu computers. However, on October 24, 2006, in Japan, an incident occurred where a Fujitsu notebook PC using a Sony battery of the type recalled in the U.S. suffered a smoking and sparking incident, resulting in minor burns to its user. Therefore, in the interests of customer safety, we now advise against continued use of the affected batteries such as Fujitsu FPCBP80 Battery, Fujitsu FPCBP77 Battery, Fujitsu FPCBP68 Battery, Fujitsu FPCBP63 Battery and Fujitsu FPCBP95 Battery.

Where can I get more information about the use of battery power with my notebook?

For additional information on operating mobile computers on battery power, please refer to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's website article located at: http://www.batterystores.ca

How do I know if my Fujitsu notebook PC qualifies for a free replacement battery under this program?

Please refer to the automated exchange program, which can be found at: http://www.computers.us.fujitsu.com/battery/ or call us at 1-800-8FUJITSU.

When will the replacement batteries be available?

Fujitsu will send your replacement battery when available based upon the information you provide via the website. Batteries will begin to be available from Sony in early November.

My notebook PC runs hot. Should I be concerned? Do I need a new battery?

Not likely. This is normal. Notebooks will generate heat when used in different applications or when the battery is being charged. As a rule of thumb, the more demanding the application, the more heat that will be generated. If you feel your notebook is excessively hot you should contact our support hotline at 1-800-8FUJITSU for guidance.

long-lasting 'Enviro' batteries

Hewlett-Packard early next year will begin offering a new line of "Enviro" batteries for laptop users who want to upgrade to longer-lasting and more sustainably designed batteries.

HP and Boston Power have been testing the Sonata lithium-ion batteries for three years. The batteries such as Hp F2299A battery, Hp F3172A battery, Hp Pavilion ZT1000 battery, Hp Pavilion XZ200 battery, Hp Pavilion ZT1100 battery, Hp Omnibook XT1000 battery and Hp Omnibook XT1500 battery were designed specifically for laptop use. After three years of use, the batteries will be able to keep 80 percent of their initial charge.

Hp laptop battery time typically starts to drop significantly after 150 or so charges, or cycles. Boston Power says that its batteries can be charged 1,000 times and get "like new" performance.

An HP representative on Tuesday said that the Sonata batteries will cost between $20 and $30 more than traditional batteries and will be available on some consumer laptop machines. There will be a three-year warranty, and no system changes are required.

The Enviro batteries are marketed as more environmentally friendly for a number of reasons, according to Christina Lampe-Onnerud, founder and CEO of Boston Power.

The company chose not to use any PVC plastic or heavy metals--cadmium, arsenic, or mercury--in the manufacturing process. The batteries can also be recycled, said Lampe-Onnerud, adding that the battery has received a number of "green" certifications.

More simply, Lampe-Onnerud argued that purchasing one product that lasts for at least three years, rather than buying multiple batteries, is more environmentally sustainable and economical.

"Our tests found that 40 percent of consumers over three years have replaced laptop batteries up to five times. If each is $150, that's almost the cost of the whole system," she said. "I think this will change the appetite for sustainable products. Instead of purchasing something expendable, they can have something that lasts."

Boston Power is in discussions with other computer manufacturers, she added without disclosing any names.

The company also plans to release a portable lithium-ion battery for adding charge to cell phones or other gadgets and intends to enter the auto battery market, Lampe-Onnerud said.

Batteries can be divided into two categories, one category is “one cell”, and the other is “secondary battery.” “One cell” As the name suggests is the use of no value once the battery, “secondary battery” simply means that rechargeable batteries, can charge for further use.

“One cell” includes alkaline batteries such as IBM ThinkPad T40 Battery, IBM ThinkPad T41 Battery, IBM ThinkPad T42 Battery, IBM ThinkPad T43 Battery, IBM ThinkPad R50 Battery and IBM ThinkPad R51 Battery, Meng zinc batteries, such as Chongqing, a train of gold on the market batteries are alkaline batteries. Disposable batteries are cheap, easy to use, and alternative brand names. However, its disadvantages are also more lethal, first of all can not be recycled, one-time investment was low, but the cumulative use of the high cost. Another disposable battery arbitrarily discarded after use, then, will cause environmental pollution. At present, many countries have adopted a management “a cell” of the relevant laws and regulations. I personally feel that a “one cell” is not much to purchase necessary.

“Secondary battery” includes the type of respect very much on the market are more common nickel-metal hydride batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries and lithium batteries. Nickel-metal hydride batteries and nickel-cadmium batteries are the same appearance, and is divided into AA and AAA. The same as the rechargeable battery. But their works are not the same, nickel-cadmium batteries are extremely nickel oxide, the negative is extremely spongy metal cadmium, mostly electrolyte, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide alkaline solution. Ni-Cd battery compact, rugged, shock, vibration, the battery self-discharge is small, suitable for the use of high-current discharge. It is characterized by long cycle life, in theory, there are 2000-4000 times cycle life.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries are low-voltage nickel-metal hydride batteries, to Ni (OH) 2 as the cathode to hydrogen storage alloy as negative electrode, potassium hydroxide alkaline aqueous solution as electrolyte. Ni-MH battery than the energy density (that is, an equal volume of batteries, Ni-MH batteries have greater capacity than the nickel-cadmium batteries), in theory, Ni-MH battery is the energy density of nickel-cadmium batteries 1.5-2 times; there is Ni-MH battery is good environmentally friendly, Ni-MH batteries do not use metal cadmium, or use of toxic substances, does not pollute the environment; there are Ni-MH battery has largely eliminated the “memory effect.” That the memory effect and battery capacity of the increasingly high demand in the civilian grade nickel-metal hydride batteries are already replaced the nickel-cadmium batteries.

Lithium batteries can be understood as digital products, special batteries, its shape according to the design of digital products can be arbitrarily changed, lithium batteries almost no memory effect, and use a long time. However, lithium batteries are expensive, and between the different specifications of the lithium batteries can not be generic.

Optional items

In the rechargeable batteries are printed on the surface of a similar mark, indicating this product is what type of battery. NI-MH says that nickel-metal hydride batteries, is actually very simple, NI is the chemical letters Nickel, NH, said hydrogen. By the same token NI-Cd is expressed as a nickel-cadmium batteries.

Battery rated capacity refers to a certain discharge conditions, the battery discharge to the release of electricity cut-off voltage. No. 7 currently on the market capacity of the IBM Laptop Battery 400mAh-900 mAh mostly between the 5 batteries from 1000 mAh-2500 mAh range. Of course, in a sense, the capacity is of course the bigger the better, because of large capacity means longer battery life.

Marketed in some of the work packages battery capacity is also very high, but I do not recommend to buy. Because the battery in the factory hours in order to A, B, C 3, B, C-class product is mainly the product capacity, most of these products is that the battery pack work available in the market. Also noteworthy is that among the different capacities of batteries do not mix. For example, three 2300 mAh of the batteries 1300 mAh battery, which emit an effective current of only 1300 mAh, from the physics can be very simple to understand this point.

Also, when buying batteries may wish to consider under the Sanyo, Panasonic and other major brands and other products made in China is also a good source of Qi. Other unknown product is best not to buy, while the purchase rechargeable batteries, they can weigh about weight. Generally heavier weight, the better its quality. Here I teach you a trick Identification of true and false Sanyo batteries, Sanyo battery cathode is not completely round, but a little bit of a square, while Haier, Sanyo batteries agent the highest only at 1850mAh.

The rechargeable batteries are generally marked on the standard charge time and quick charge time, charging the speed with charger related.

Slow charge generally use constant current charging mode, and the battery is full and automatically converted to trickle charge state. Has the advantage of slow charge circuit design is simple and easy to implement, prices are also lower; As a result of low current constant current charging, effectively reducing the battery charging process in the heat, to extend the battery life is very good. Drawback is the charging time is too long, especially in the case of large quantity of batteries a bit powerless.

Fast charge is generally using a large pulse current charging, but because of high current battery charging process will generate polarized responses, leading to the rapid increase in battery temperature, full power on after resume a likely explosion and combustion, so fast charge also uses a special chip to control the charging process, automatically stop charging once filled so that the whole process of charging has become safe and efficient.

In the end is a standard charger or optional fast charger that can be purchased according to the needs of users. Here to remind consumers to purchase brand-name products charger must be, and if I get quick charger, be sure to understand whether the automatic power-off function.

Battery Maintenance

The use of rechargeable battery users. Bought back the battery power is low in general, the first charge must be adequate. Ni-MH battery charging time are generally more than 16 hours. To achieve best results, generally more than 3 times repeated charge-discharge can. In addition, the battery in use after three rounds, the best place to find the opportunity to make a further charge fully recharge, so as not there is residual power in the battery when the repeated charge, or will shorten battery life.

In addition, in order to avoid the loss of electricity, use nickel-metal hydride battery user, remove the battery charge after the power end, do not let the battery positive and negative poles at the same time contact with conductors. And not to frequent deep discharge of the battery, as this will affect the battery’s chemical properties. And do not mix old and new batteries.

IBM preps Windows 2000 notebooks

Big Blue will beef up three notebooks--the ThinkPad 570, 390X and 240--to support Microsoft's delayed operating system. Windows 2000 will be formally introduced Feb. 17.

Windows 2000 is aimed mainly at businesses, while the follow-on to Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, due to ship this spring, is targeted at the consumer market.

Analysts have said that many corporate customers won't make the jump to Windows 2000 until after June, when Microsoft is expected to release Windows 2000 Service Pack 1, a package of bug fixes and other software patches. Many corporate purchasers are notoriously leery of version "1.0" of any software product.

The ThinkPad 570 will be available with either a 450-MHz or 500-MHz Pentium III processor and up to a 12 GB hard drive.

The 570 model, which sells for $2,999, comes with a 450-MHz processor, 64 MB of RAM expandable to 320 MB, 6 GB hard drive, 13.3-inch TFT display, 56k modem and Windows 2000. The 4.9-pound portable is also available with Windows 98.

IBM is souping up the ThinkPad 390X with more storage and longer battery life. The base system comes with a 450-MHz processor, 64-MB of RAM, 12 GB hard drive, integrated CD-ROM drive, 14-inch TFT display, 56k modem and Windows 2000. The $2,999 portable also features a battery such as IBM ThinkPad R40 Battery, IBM ThinkPad R32 Battery, IBM 02K6928 Battery, IBM 02K7054 Battery, IBM ThinkPad A20 Battery, IBM ThinkPad A20M Battery, IBM ThinkPad A21M Battery rated at 7.3 hours.

The ultra-slim ThinkPad 240, which weighs 2.9 pounds, will come with more storage than previously available. The $2,099 portable will pack a 400-MHz Celeron processor, 64 MB of memory, 12 GB hard drive, 10.4-inch display, 56k modem and Windows 2000.

Sources close to IBM said the new ThinkPads would be available Feb. 17.

Intel speeds up low-power laptop chips

The chipmaker launched four in all: an ultra-low-voltage 1.1GHz Pentium M, an ultra-low-voltage 900MHz Celeron M, a low-voltage 1.3GHz Pentium M, and a standard 1.4GHz Celeron M. PC makers, including Motion Computing, followed with new computer models.

The chips update Intel's line of energy-efficient processors geared toward small, lightweight notebooks, such as IBM's 2.7-pound ThinkPad X40. These notebooks are sometimes called ultraportables, or mininotebooks.

Analysts say that although this market makes up a relatively small portion of overall notebook sales, the machines are sought after by companies with employees who travel a lot. Such companies are willing to pay more for the small size, which benefits Intel even if it sells fewer of the chips.

The ultra-low-voltage chips have relatively low clock speeds, but they use the least power of any of Intel's notebook chips. By operating at a hair over 1 volt, the chips consume about 7 watts of power. Manufactures typically use these chips in their thinnest, lightest models. Because the chips consume less power, they produce less heat, thus allowing companies to put them into thinner chassis and enabling them to use smaller batteries such as IBM 92P1089 Battery, IBM 92P1087 Battery, IBM 08K8196 Battery,
IBM 92P1102 Battery, IBM 92P1077 Battery, IBM 92P1073 Battery, IBM 08K8199 Battery, IBM 08K8198 Battery, IBM 08K8197 Battery and IBM 92P1075 Battery, which reduces weight.

Among the computer makers that plan to use the new chips is Motion Computing, which will put the 1.1GHz ultra-low-voltage Pentium M in its newest tablet, the M1400. The $1,999 tablet touts a number of upgrades over its predecessor, the M1300, including the ability to record audio, security functions such as a fingerprint reader, and a screen with a wider viewing angle.

Power and speed Intel's 1.3GHz low-voltage Pentium M operates at 1.18 volts and consumes about 12 watts.

Standard Pentium M and Celeron M chips, such as the 1.4GHz Celeron M that debuted Wednesday, operate at about 1.36 volts and typically consume around 25 watts, Intel said. In contrast, some of the chipmaker's desktop Pentium 4 processors can consume 100 watts or more.

Intel separates its chips by price and performance. The Pentium M offers the most performance and the greatest number of features, while the Celeron M is designed to cost less, helping PC makers to deliver lower-priced notebooks and tablets.

The new 900MHz ultra-low-voltage Celeron lists for $161, Intel said, and the 1.1GHz ultra-low-voltage Pentium M is $262. Due to their basic similarities, the two chips are likely to be offered as options in some of the same notebook models.

IBM revamps its ultraportable notebook

The new ThinkPad X30, appearing Thursday, combines a number of features found on larger notebooks and puts them into a 3.6-pound frame.

The notebook comes with built-in WiFi wireless networking and Bluetooth capabilities, software for network hopping, a security chip for hardened authentication and encryption, and a FireWire port for plugging in consumer-electronics devices such as digital cameras.

"We see a dramatic rise in wireless adoption," said Leo Suarez, vice president of worldwide product marketing at IBM. A year from now, 40 percent to 50 percent of notebooks will come with built-in wireless, he said. Two years from now the figure will climb past 70 percent.

The new ThinkPad X30 also comes with a portable docking bay that plugs into the back of the notebook, giving it an extra battery such as IBM 08K8026 battery, IBM ThinkPad T21 battery, IBM ThinkPad T20 battery, IBM ThinkPad X61 battery, IBM ThinkPad T61 battery, IBM ThinkPad X41 battery, IBM ThinkPad X40 battery and IBM ThinkPad X20 battery and an optical drive. With the bay plugged in, the ThinkPad X30 can run for more than eight hours, the company said.

Despite a slump in PC sales in general, notebook sales continue to climb. Prices have been steadily declining, and consumers and IT managers have begun to more readily see the advantages of wireless computing, said Alan Promisel, an analyst with market research firm IDC. Notebook sales will increase 16.3 percent in 2003, he predicted.

Increasing sales, combined with customer demands for performance, are prompting manufacturers to tweak and enhance their designs. Wireless connectivity, for instance, can sap battery power. To tackle this performance problem, IBM has installed power management software to improve overall energy conservation, especially during steady-state periods, when the system isn't handling taxing projects such as data transmission.

In all, more than 25 new patents are embodied in the design of the ThinkPad X30, the company said.

The new notebook also comes with many of the security features found on IBM's larger notebooks. Rapid Restore, for instance, lets consumers replicate their applications and data below a partition in the hard drive. If the computer gets infected, all of the data above the partition can be scraped away and the restored desktop can be brought up in a few clicks.

The ThinkPad X30 also features the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem 2.0, an internal chip that conforms to the standards from the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance for authentication and encryption/decryption.

Despite these features, the ThinkPad X30 could prove to be a tough sell in the United States. Ultraportables, which feature 12-inch or smaller screens and ultralow power processors from Intel or Transmeta, have enjoyed some success in Europe and Japan, but they have yet to become hugely popular in the United States, according to Promisel and others.
