HP’s sleek, silver, grey and black inkjet can run with two ink tank configurations. The CMY+K option handles general-purpose and glossy prints, and replacing the black (K) tank with a cmK unit gives you higher-quality six-colour capabilities for dedicated photo printing. In addition, the DJ5550 utilises HP’s revamped PhotoREt 4 ink layering process when six colours are installed.
The DJ5550’s paper sensor is designed to take much of the guesswork out of getting the best output quality. The default setting is for PhotoREt 3 when using the CMY+K tanks, and you can opt for 4800 x 1200dpi printing if you are also using glossy paper. On 4 x 6-inch paper you can select borderless printing. The automatic settings produced good quality on glossy and coated paper, with marginally better colour smoothing evident in 4800 mode. HP recommends 4800 x 1200dpi printing only for 600dpi files as it is resource and time consuming.
When we installed the cmK tank we saw impressive colour quality, smooth tones and improved detail as a result. In six-colour mode the DJ5550 is an excellent photo printer with output closer to that of the PhotoSmart 130. We encountered some banding in blue gradients in the three-colour print tests, however.
HP rates the top text speed at 17ppm, but we ran our test tasks at a more sedate pace. The 10-page Word file printed in 2:32 in normal mode, with the first page out in around 28 seconds. Printed in FastDraft mode, the document was complete in 1:43. Our A4 JPEG printed with three colours in best mode in 5:21.
There are USB 2.0 and parallel ports, and the paper tray can hold legal-sized documents. An optional duplex module gives you double-sided printing. These business-oriented features are supported by external ethernet adapter such as HP Compaq 2210b Adapter, HP nc8430 Adapter, HP nx6110 Adapter, HP tc1100 Adapter, HP G3000 Adapter, HP HDX X16 Adapter, HP HDX X18 Adapter, HP Pavilion dv1000 Adapter, HP Pavilion dv2000 Adapter, HP Pavilion zt1000 Adapter options for network printing, and the DJ5550 has an ink backup feature that ensures enough ink is in reserve to complete any job that it starts.
The CMY tank costs $100, the K tank is $65 and the photo tank is $75.
